Toledo says 73 police and fire layoffs are possible if Issue 16 fails

If you live in Toledo, is on your ballot, and the city has now said what a no vote would mean. The Blade reports the city could lay off 73 employees, cancel its 2027 police and fire recruitment classes, and end curbside recycling and other services if voters reject the income tax increase next week.

Issue 16 would temporarily raise Toledo's income tax by 0.25%. Deputy Mayor Abby Arnold walked through two 2027 budget scenarios at a Wednesday meeting and said the 73 layoffs would fall between police and fire.

  • Term: Jan. 1, 2027 through the end of 2030
  • If it passes: new police and fire classes of 40 each
  • If it passes: pools open, 10 officers added to gang task force
  • If it fails: all youth programming eliminated, pools stay closed

The Local 92 president says firefighters were told about potential cuts Tuesday. The mayor's office says he wants to review the information first.

Residents and businesses file a class action over the MC Tank chemical release

If you were inside the evacuation or shelter-in-place zone, this one may include you. Residents and businesses have filed a proposed class action over the glycidyl methacrylate () release at the MC Tank terminal on Progress Avenue. It covers everyone subjected to the orders or otherwise exposed, and Heather Keyes is the lead plaintiff.

The shelter-in-place order reached far more people than the evacuation

  • Defendants: M.C. Tank Transport, Inc. and Kenan Advantage Group, Inc.
  • Seeks: economic, non-economic and punitive damages, medical monitoring
  • Complaint blames "an error" during a material transfer

Meanwhile, three law firms representing plaintiffs urge residents to protect their rights as the company offers compensation. Attorneys say you may be asked to sign binding legal agreements in exchange for reimbursement for incidental costs.

The complaint also says the plume reached beyond the official zones. Ottawa River Elementary students were sent home early after reporting headaches and odors.

CCNO board votes 10-2 to keep its ICE contract but will study life without it

The Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio's governing board rejected another request Wednesday to cancel its ICE contract. Commissioner Pete Gerken's motion lost 10-2, and Lucas County Sheriff Mike Navarre backed it for the first time. Representatives of Defiance, Fulton, Henry and Williams counties opposed it.

One change from past meetings: the board asked Executive Director Dennis Sullivan's staff to study 's finances without the contract.

  • ICE detainees held Wednesday: 83
  • Staffing savings if a unit closed: $500,000
  • U.S. Marshals contract revenue: $2.7 million a year

Defiance County Sheriff Doug Engel said detainees would otherwise be held farther from their families. Gerken called that a "false narrative." CCNO has also lost the City of Toledo as a partner, and Gerken says Lucas County uses about 145 beds a day.

House Speaker Mike Johnson rallies in Holland for Derek Merrin in the 9th District race

If you live in Ohio's 9th District, the Speaker of the House just came to town. Mike Johnson rallied Republican voters behind Derek Merrin at the Lucas County Republican Party headquarters in Holland. "This is a top five race in America," Johnson said. Merrin is in a rematch with Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur, and redistricting shifted the district further to the right.

Cleveland 19 notes Kaptur has held the seat since 1983 and is seeking her 23rd term. The district covers the entire northwestern corner of Ohio, and Election Day is Tue., Nov. 3. Merrin says his campaign's polling has him winning "by a couple points."

Why are we so worried about poor people taking more than they need, but never seem to question why billionaires keep wanting more when they already have more money than they could ever spend?

“It’s crazy how we judge people for wanting a little extra to get by, but rarely question those who have more wealth than they could ever need while others are struggling just to survive. Make it make sense.”

The Wrap

Soak up the sunshine while it lasts. Through Halloween we should still see a fair bit of it, but on Nov. 1 clouds become more likely, and the cloud season runs through January. The drop-off from October to November is always sharp. You can blame the Great Lakes: the water is still warm from summer, and cold air from the northwest rolls over it. Take your lunch outside this week.
