COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Dec. 21, a memorial service called An Unhoused Blue Christmas honored more than 27 Toledo neighbors who died while homeless this year. Local churches and community groups organized the event and urged residents to connect those in need with outreach services.  WTVG
  • Bush's Beans pledges to donate $25,000 for every Rockets touchdown at the bowl game today to the Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank and offers free entry + bean-related promotions to the first 2,000 fans who bring a can of Bush's Beans.  WTOL
  • Local nonprofit S.T.A.R.S. is organizing a gift card drive to support TPS staff who may face layoffs in February as job cuts are under review with a Board vote on Jan. 27. Local businesses are asked to pledge $100 gift cards + help those who once taught your kids.  WTVG
  • Ottawa Hills senior Charlotte Ellingson was named this week’s Rising Star for her love of learning and desire to give back to her community+introduced by Action News anchor James Starks, she shows the spirit of local service.  WTVG
  • The Grand Lodge Food Pantry has served local families for 23 years on the third Thursday of each month and is now receiving a $1,300 donation (from Yark Automotive Group and 13 Action News) to help boost emergency food services while it seeks a permanent building.  WTVG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Toledo have dropped to an average of $2.48 per gallon ahead of the holidays, with a nearly 40-cent decline in one week, a GasBuddy analysis shows. The report noted prices ranged from $2.12 to $2.99 per gallon, marking one of the lowest seasonal levels in five years.  WTOL

  • University of Toledo astronomers may have discovered the first stars in space, called Population III stars, according to lead researcher Dr. Eli Visbal. The study now offers fresh clues about how our universe began.  WTOL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fire departments in northwest Ohio were awarded nearly $5 million in FEMA grants announced by Rep. Kaptur’s office on Monday (Dec. 22). Toledo Fire & Rescue received over $1.1 million, while other local departments secured funds for needed equipment and extra staff.  WTVG
  • ODOT urges drivers to slow down and avoid distractions today as holiday travel intensifies and colder weather may bring icy conditions, reminding motorists to leave extra room for semi-trucks & check OHGO for updates.  WTOL

  • Medical student Emma Scott from UToledo revealed research showing that certain nail products may cause allergic contact dermatitis. Her study advises consumers to review product ingredients carefully before use + underscores potential dermatologic risks.  The University of Toledo
