COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday, more than 27,000 toys were distributed to local children through the Hope for the Holidays Toy Drive in Toledo. The initiative (co-hosted by the Salvation Army and Marines’ Toys for Tots) allowed parents to choose personalized gifts for their kids.  WTVG
  • The YWCA is receiving the highest number of calls in years even though calls usually dip during the holidays (the director of victim services noted that abuse persists year-round).  WTOL
  • Empowered Wellness Foundation and community partners are hosting a winter coat giveaway for adults and children on Dec. 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Wayman Palmer YMCA on Bancroft Street (items will be given on a first-come-first-served basis).  WTVG
  • Great Lakes Santas are delivering support at Nuestra Gente Community Center as the 8th annual Feliz Navidad celebration and distribution is set for Monday; residents may visit for assistance while supplies last (no registration is needed).  WTOL

  • Will-Power OH LLC filed for a natural gas power plant facility, Apollo Power Generation Facility, to be built next to the Meta site under construction+ the project is aimed at bolstering power for local data center operations.  WTOL
  • Cinnabon will open at Center Court in Franklin Park Mall on Monday at 11 a.m. The new bakery, Toledo’s only standalone location, will offer a free Minibon to the first 50 guests (a special launch treat) as it seeks to bring new energy to the mall.  WTOL

  • Ohio officials approved 17 projects expected to create 2,347 jobs and boost over $148 million in new annual payroll, with major developments in Clyde (Whirlpool), Marion, and other northwest Ohio communities while attracting more than $1.1B in private investment.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UToledo’s Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center earned top recognition as it was accredited by both the American College of Surgeons and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare — joining fewer than a dozen centers worldwide.  The University of Toledo

  • Tax season changes include updated standard deduction rates and revised tax brackets that will affect residents—reviewing the new guidelines early can help prepare for filing returns.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal agents are launching the Fentanyl Free America initiative in Toledo as law enforcement targets emerging drug supply chains and warns families to talk with children about the dangers of buying pills online + counterfeit drugs. Officials say the effort will focus on disrupting routes and protecting local communities.  WTVG

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local woman, speaking anonymously, shared her struggle with addiction after losing her father to an overdose, saying stigma once labeled her family as the black sheep. She credits New Concepts Behavioral Health with helping her begin recovery.  WTVG
  • Dr. Eltahawy (a UToledo Health cardiovascular specialist) said weather, stress and holiday overindulgence contributed to a spike in heart attack deaths on Dec. 16. He advises families to discuss health histories during the winter holidays.  The University of Toledo
