COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Directions Credit Union donated $8,000 to Toledo Northwestern Ohio Food Bank; the funds will buy healthy items for the holidays and winter season. The donation will help the food bank prepare essential supplies for local families.  WTOL
  • City officials and Ability Center representatives are hosting a focus group on housing accessibility to gather local feedback about meeting Toledo’s housing needs.  WTOL
  • Toledo Heights Library will close permanently on Dec. 30 to consolidate services, leaving a three-year gap until a new, accessible branch opens in 2028. Residents relying on the library for digital access and food programs must use alternate locations (such as Heatherdowns branch) in the meantime.  Toledo Free Press
  • Local coach Ryan Glaze, who has mentored athletes for more than 30 years, is uniting the community to support his son battling cancer and a fundraiser called All Arms Around Jordan will take place Sunday to help cover treatment costs.  WTVG
  • Local businesses Shrader Tire and Oil and Cousino Restoration and Environmental collected and professionally cleaned over 300 coats and winter accessories during their annual drive in November. They will donate the items to local charities to help families meet winter needs.  WTVG

  • Toledo’s Cake in a Cup will close this spring after nearly 20 years as rising ingredient costs and chain competition strain its sales (a five-pound bag of cocoa now costs nearly $50).  WTVG
  • Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio announced that its 16th store, set to open in early 2026 at 7504 W. Central Avenue, will offer a modern shopping experience and donation process that funds workforce development programs.  WTVG

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 19th annual Acoustics for Autism festival will take place in Maumee on March 1 with free admission and will feature 107 musical acts across 10 stages.  WTOL
  • The Traveling Bricks exhibit at Imagination Station is currently on display with over one million Lego pieces—visitors also can craft their own creations as part of the included admission.  WTOL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ohio casinos saw increased revenue yesterday as gambling among younger adults rose, and a Toledo organization stepped in to help those facing addiction challenges — offering local support and resources.  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Riley Derue, a UToledo criminal justice major, graduates Saturday and is applying to continue her career with the Secret Service in their Uniformed Division after a successful internship. She also contributed to campus organizations and the Sylvania Police Division (a local boost) while building her path in law enforcement.  The University of Toledo
  • Toledo Public Schools is planning changes to boost competitiveness with a potential four-day week + new partnerships for social services. Superintendent Durant said community meetings will explain the proposals, and only support staff may face job cuts while certified teachers remain secure.  WTVG

  • Water was restored to the Main Campus buildings following Sunday's water main break (McMaster Hall, Stranahan Hall, Health and Human Services, and Snyder Memorial); drinking fountains remain closed due to a boil advisory.  The University of Toledo

  • UToledo President James Holloway and Dr. Charles Callahan will lead a Perspectives panel discussion on community health tomorrow at UToledo, Dec. 11, to address ways to improve Ohio's poor outcomes in health spending.   • Ohio Casino Control Commission reported that October set a record for sports betting wagers with over $1.13 billion placed — surpassing the previous record from January 2023 — as betting surged across Lucas County and state venues.  WTVG
