COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ottawa Park's outdoor ice skating rink is now open for the season and public skating is available nearly every day (bring your own skates).  The Blade
  • Navy veteran John Baldwin leads Right at Home, a local agency offering in-home care for seniors who want to age in place. Founded in 2010 in Perrysburg, the agency also helps veterans check their benefit eligibility (a service inspired by his own experience).  Toledo Free Press
  • On Dec. 8, the sister of a Toledo man who died in the snow called on officials to improve shelter and emergency assistance for unhoused residents (she stressed the need for stronger safety measures during harsh weather).  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the second annual Kidpreneur Market event in Bedford, three brothers ran the Triple T booth to build confidence in young entrepreneurs. The event offers hands-on learning for children interested in starting their own businesses.  The Blade
  • Maumee Schools launched free little food pantries to help students amid SNAP uncertainty. The district aims to ensure no child goes hungry through the program.  WTOL
  • Toledo Public Schools is planning changes such as a four-day week and staffing cuts to address a $60 million funding shortfall. Donor Tom Brady remains committed to the district but warned that fast changes could further hurt students already facing extended absences.  WTOL

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Rockets accepted an invite to play in the Bush’s Boca Raton Bowl of Beans on Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. on ESPN; they will face Louisville at FAU’s Flagler Credit Union Stadium in Boca Raton, Florida (ticket details and alumni events to be announced later).  The University of Toledo
  • The Toledo Walleye rallied for a 3-2 win today in a tight, one-goal game, marking their knack for close finishes as they notch wins in 11 of their 20 contests. The result boosts their season momentum.  The Blade
  • Liberty Center defeated Wheelersburg in the Division V state championship game to secure its second title and complete its first undefeated season in team history.  WTOL
  • University of Toledo football will play in the Boca Raton Bowl when the Rockets face Louisville, marking their third bowl appearance in 10 years.  The Blade
  • Robert Weiner, a sixth-year co-offensive coordinator (and quarterbacks coach), has been named interim head coach of the Toledo football team ahead of the Boca Raton Bowl.  The Blade
  • Top quarterback recruit Bo Polston decommitted from Toledo Saturday after coach Jason Candle left for a new role (Candle’s exit prompted the decision), a move that directly impacts the team's recruitment plans.  The Blade
