COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Brandon Johnson Miracle Foundation held its eighth annual Christmas Miracle toy giveaway on Thursday — in honor of Brandon Johnson, who lost his life last year. The event provided toys to local families during the holiday season.  WTOL
  • Former Blade president William Block, Jr. announced a $1 million donation to 10 local nonprofits in Toledo to give back to the community (he said strong local support inspired his gift).  The Blade
  • WTOL hosts a Downtown Gift Drop at its studios at Summit and Cherry today with Santa and partners including the Lucas County Children Services Toy Room (Gift of Joy) to offer holiday gifts to kids.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Glenn Chambers, a former police officer turned biochemistry student, will graduate Dec. 13 from UToledo after key research work (including work on N-heterocyclic compounds) in Dr. Wei Li's lab. He plans to apply for lab and Ph.D. program roles to develop treatments for cancer and neurodivergent diseases.  The University of Toledo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An audit revealed that Toledo-based Empowered for Excellence Behavioral Health owes state Medicaid $1.87 million for improper billing practices, and officials say corrective actions are forthcoming.  The Blade
  • Due to freezing temperatures and wind chills in the single digits, Toledo opened emergency overnight warming shelters last night at St. Paul's Methodist Church for singles and couples and at Leading Families Home for families; transportation is available by dialing 211 for those needing longer-term shelter or housing assistance.  Spectrum News 1

HEALTH NEWS

  • A safe sleep program led by the county coroner is helping parents & caregivers learn proper techniques to put babies to bed. The initiative began last year in Lucas County and continues to save lives.  The Blade

  • The Toledo women’s volleyball program unveiled new banners (honoring its 50-year legacy) at Savage Arena last week. The milestone marks a bold bet on the sport's future and celebrates decades of achievement in the community.  The Blade
  • Toledo football secured 24 signees in what is called MAC’s best-ever recruiting class for the third consecutive year. The new players will join the team next season + adding to its depth.  The Blade
