COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents of Perrysburg Township expressed concern on Wednesday about a potential data center near their homes, and township trustees have provided a measured response to the issue.  WTOL
  • Lucas County Children Services is hosting its annual Shred for a Toy donation drive on Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. across from the Franklin Park Mall (4870 Monroe Street). Bring up to five bags of documents to shred in exchange for a new, unwrapped toy for children.  WTVG
  • The Compassionate Friends of Northwest Ohio will hold a candle lighting event on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 6:45 p.m. at Toledo Children's Memorial (4501 Jackman Rd) to honor children who have died. The event features music, poetry and remarks by life coach Tim Butler with donations welcome.  WTVG

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Toledo firefighters rescued a large dog from a house fire on the 2900 block of Hardale Boulevard on Wednesday using a pet oxygen mask; the dog (which was unresponsive at first) was taken by ambulance for emergency vet care.  WTVG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A water leak on Arco Drive has nearly halted production at Chempace Corporation as workers truck in water at higher costs; the city said repair work will begin late this week or early next week—hoping to restore the regular supply soon.  WTVG
  • Today, Schmucker’s reopened after an August fire closed the local restaurant — a beloved community spot — drawing a packed house of loyal customers and a visit from Santa Claus. The reopening marks a fresh start for the well-known eatery.  WTOL

CULTURE NEWS

  • The National Museum of the Great Lakes will debut its temporary exhibit (Frozen in Time: A Wooden and Antique Boat Showcase) on Dec. 5, showcasing historic and new wooden watercraft through Feb. 15.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seven engineering seniors installed a squirrel obstacle course at the Toledo Zoo that will be featured at the College of Engineering’s Senior Design Expo tomorrow from noon to 3 p.m. in Nitschke Hall, showcasing creative and safe design techniques.  The University of Toledo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state auditor found over $1.75 million in improper Medicaid payments to Empowered for Excellence Behavioral Health between 2021 and 2023 and is recommending nearly $1.87 million in repayment with added interest; the agency now awaits a decision from Medicaid or the Attorney General’s Office.  WTVG
  • Federal rules now require SNAP recipients up to age 64 to work, volunteer or attend school 20 hours weekly to qualify. Ohio expects full implementation by Feb. 1 following Michigan's lead (exemptions for veterans, homeless and former foster youth have been removed), officials said.  WTVG

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Harvey J. Steele Memorial Blood Drive will be held on Dec. 23 and invites Toledo residents to donate blood during the holiday season when supplies are urgently needed.  WTOL

SPORTS NEWS

  • Toledo women’s volleyball makes its NCAA Tournament debut today at Wilkinson Hall in Bloomington when the Rockets take on No. 4 Indiana after winning the Mid-American Conference Championship (3-1 over Western Michigan).  WTOL
  • The Greater Toledo Classic announced it will donate $337,000 to children’s charities and set the 2026 tournament dates for July 17 to 19 at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania. The event will host 143 Epson Tour players, including defending champion Mia Hammond, as it continues to support local nonprofits.  WTOL
  • University of Toledo athletic departments introduced AI training to improve staff efficiency and performance on December 3. Bryan Blair (VP and director of athletics) explained the new system will enhance operations.  The University of Toledo
