COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leading Families Home acquired local shelter Family House to expand services that support community members facing tough times and homelessness.  WTOL
  • Airmen from the 180th Fighter Wing helped unload Christmas trees at Wheeler Farms in Whitehouse on Monday—supporting local holiday preparations.  WTOL
  • Toledo community groups are giving away food to help families prepare for Thanksgiving. Delta Hotels by Marriott near UTMC is offering 50 pies and 50 turkeys, BESN X Community is handing out 150 frozen turkeys on Broadway, and Ameera Mediterranean Bistro in Sylvania is serving 100 free hot meals today (2 p.m. to 6 p.m.).  WTVG
  • PNC Bank President Bill McDonnell discussed Gift of Joy—an annual toy drive that provides toys for children served by Lucas County Children Services during the cold weather.  WTOL
  • Local groups are hosting free Thanksgiving meals for those in need today—Helping Hands of St. Louis serves meals from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 443 Sixth Street, Nuestra Gente Community Center offers dinner baskets from noon to 1:30 p.m., and Win Waste Innovations gives out 150 turkeys at 338 Sandusky Street in Fostoria from 6 to 7:30 p.m. On November 27, St. Joan of Arc Parish and Compassion Toledo Church with Calvary Bible Chapel will host community dinners for Thanksgiving.  WTVG
  • Three Toledo siblings have organized food drives to fight rising food insecurity and help ensure no child goes hungry. They are collecting food for local programs to support families in need.  WTVG
  • Families at Sylvan Elementary collected thousands of donations to help Sylvania Area Family Services when it was in dire need; the students organized the effort to support local families facing hardship.  WTOL

BUSINESS NEWS

  • After a fire closed Schmucker's in west Toledo in August, the restaurant has restarted baking and selling its pies — in time for Thanksgiving.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shawn Monteiro, a bioengineering senior at UToledo, is developing a new hand immobilizer device that has secured provisional patent status and will lower surgical costs and improve safety. He plans to apply for the utility patent in February—while continuing his humanitarian work both locally and abroad.  The University of Toledo
  • Eric Buetikofer, director of military and veteran affairs at UToledo, said the school was ranked among the top 50 for veterans when Military Times released its report on November 24. The ranking shows UToledo as one of the best institutions in the region for veteran support.  The University of Toledo

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • AIM Recycling and Genoa Bank are collecting old holiday lights at local bank branches and Nature’s Nursery drop boxes to fund wildlife rescue — AIM will donate up to 20 cents per pound collected and the drive runs through Jan. 12, 2026.  WTVG

  • With the holidays coming and the economy feeling shaky, experts say many people feel worried about money—offering advice on easy steps to manage spending and handle budget talks. The guidance aims to help families reduce money stress as they plan for upcoming expenses.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department had nine new firefighters take the oath of office Monday — they became sworn team members — as the department expands its emergency response team.  WTOL

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Toledo women's volleyball team came back from a nine-point gap in the fourth set to win its first-ever MAC Championship by beating Western Michigan 3-1 at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green on Sunday—head coach Brian Wright led the team in his first season.  The University of Toledo
