COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way said calls to the 2-1-1 assistance line outpaced last year's totals (demand increased during the summer) as residents faced growing challenges.  WTOL
  • The Town Center at Levis Commons is hosting a tree lighting ceremony—presented by 13abc—to kick off the holiday season for local residents.  WTVG
  • Local organizers launched the 'Sock It to the Homeless' drive on November 19th—collecting socks to keep the homeless warm—and the event will continue in the coming days.  WTVG
  • Organizers are inviting Toledo residents to the 60th annual Turkey Day Open fundraiser—held at Heather Downs Country Club on November 27—to raise $6,000 for the Sight Center of Northwest Ohio with nine holes of golf and awards.  WTVG
  • Kevin Spitler is partnering with local businesses for the annual sock drive that began Nov. 1 and will run through Jan. 4 with record 22 drop sites in Toledo— the socks will be distributed by 419 Cares on Jan. 11 at 11:30 a.m. at 1717 Madison Ave to help homeless residents keep warm in cold winters.  WTVG
  • Volunteers at The Salvation Army packed Thanksgiving boxes on Tuesday and delivered the meals on Wednesday so 500 local families did not have to worry about food for Thanksgiving. Recipients reported the support eased financial stress — and the organization plans to assist families for Christmas.  WTVG
  • Santa will bring a boatload of live, donated Christmas trees by tugboat to the National Museum of the Great Lakes on Dec. 6 for local families as part of the museum’s largest community giveback event. Visitors can buy a tree or gift card and receive a matching hygiene kit with each donation (sign-up ends Nov. 30 at 1 p.m.).  WTVG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Schmucker’s Restaurant in Toledo is making 1,000 pies ahead of Thanksgiving using a back kitchen not hurt by an August fire, while it waits for a final city inspection. The pies will be sold Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon and Wednesday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.—the diner's full reopening date remains undecided.  WTVG
  • The Ohio House passed a bill to regulate and tax intoxicating hemp products after a loophole allowed their free sale, and lawmakers are now negotiating a final version that may include a state ban, set to start 90 days after the governor signs it. The hemp industry warned that a ban could hurt 4,000 businesses and 20,000 jobs—while a federal ban is scheduled to take effect in November if Congress does not change it.  WTVG

  • Weird Al Yankovic will visit Toledo as part of his BIGGER & WEIRDER 2026 Tour, with a show planned for next year that promises a unique music event for local fans.  WTOL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Holiday light displays change when the weather alters their brightness and colors; humid nights make soft glows and clear nights bring sharper lights. Local events this weekend, including the Toledo Zoo’s Lights Before Christmas and the Bowling Green Holiday Parade, will show these differences—residents should pay attention to weather updates as they plan their outings.  WTOL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Toledo Public Schools have put Narcan in high school emergency kits to help with opioid overdoses. School nurses say the medicine already helped a Woodward High student in 2019—EMS is called right away since its effects last only 30 to 45 minutes.  WTVG
  • Brian Dugger discussed an 11 Investigates report that looks at the faces of the drug epidemic and the people fighting addiction in Lucas County. The report shows the challenges and efforts on the front lines.  WTOL
