COMMUNITY NEWS

  • WTOL 11 — one of ten honored groups — was recognized yesterday on National Philanthropy Day for its philanthropic work that supports the community.  WTOL
  • Broadway Food Center in Toledo has seen slower business during a nearly 40-day government shutdown that paused SNAP benefits, leaving holiday food items on backorder. Local leaders have started food pantries—such as The Random Corner Blessing Box and the Little Free Pantry of Labo Road—to help those in need.  WTVG
  • Local grocery stores saw a pause in SNAP benefits that reduced food options for many shoppers yesterday — prompting residents to open food pantries to help those in need. Community members continue to set up these pantries as a quick response to the benefit pause.  WTVG
  • In Bowling Green, the owner of Triggameals donates free meals to local residents—hoping to inspire others to pay it forward.  WTOL
  • The Toledo Zoo is competing for USA Today’s Best Zoo Lights honor with its Lights Before Christmas display—featuring over a million holiday lights and 200 illuminated animal images. Voters may cast one vote per day until December 1 at noon, and the top 10 displays will be announced December 10.  WTVG
  • LC4 moved into a new $31.9M facility on Oct. 4 — the modern building features updated kennels, outdoor play yards, QR code tracking, and a reinstated volunteer program after a past abuse scandal. Some Toledo residents remain wary because earlier rushed evaluations led to high euthanasia rates, and they question if improved operations can restore community trust.  Toledo Free Press

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On Nov. 6, the Entrepreneurial and Business Excellence Hall of Fame held its 37th annual induction ceremony at The Pinnacle, honoring local business leaders and innovators. Amber Patterson received the Rising Star Award while Don Feller, Brad Morrison, Mike Deye, and Joe Napoli earned honors for their achievements in business excellence—each accolade marking a notable milestone.  Toledo Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Toledo Public Schools announced that most Head Start and Early Childhood Education programs will be suspended starting Dec. 1 due to the government shutdown because the district did not receive its expected federal funding notice. The suspension affects more than 1,000 students and 124 employees—district officials say programs may resume if funding is received soon.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio families began receiving partial November SNAP benefits after the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services processed $66.8 million for about 364,000 households — federal instructions reduced the payment amounts by 35%. All eligible households will get their revised payments over the next few days.  WTVG
  • TARTA will hold its first coffee chat with CEO Laura Koprowski on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 8:30 a.m. at Rustbelt Coffee on N. Ontario Street to hear from Toledo residents on improving the transportation system for a strategic plan set from 2026 to 2031.  WTVG
  • The Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio, Inc. and the Ohio Department of Development are helping older Ohioans with their winter home energy bills through the Winter Home Energy Assistance Program—applications for aid must be received by May 31. The program benefits households meeting income requirements and applies assistance directly to electricity or bulk fuel bills after Jan. 1.  WTVG
  • At the Oct. 28 meeting, Lucas County Commissioners honored local activist Philip Tottenham for his role on the Global Sumud Flotilla—Tottenham, a Marine veteran, called for help to release a detained 16-year-old and spoke on ending a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The meeting also recognized child advocate Jeffrey Chesser as the 2025 Child Protections Support Advocate of the Year by the Public Children Services Association of Ohio.  Toledo Free Press

  • Melissa Riley-Kennedy, a veteran respiratory therapist at UToledo Health, was honored with the inaugural PHIL Award for her nearly 30 years of exceptional care (chosen from over 70 nominations) and praised her team for their support (as noted by the respiratory care director).  The University of Toledo

  • Tony Brown at Tony’s Restaurant & Pub shows how he cooks ribs to fall off the bone using a special recipe—his method highlights the skill he brings to every dish.  WTVG
  • Several Toledo restaurants will serve Thanksgiving dinners on Thanksgiving Day with menus that include traditional turkey, stuffing and seasonal dishes and service hours from late morning to evening.
