COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Communities in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan are planning Veterans Day events this week, including a downtown ceremony in Toledo and local parades, with many schools and community centers hosting programs plus special deals for veterans and active military. Numerous events are scheduled from today through Nov. 11, and local businesses offer free meals and discounts for veterans and service members.  WTOL
  • Several local institutions announced major changes – the University of Toledo will offer in-state tuition to all Michigan undergraduates starting fall 2026, saving $4,680 per semester, and will launch an online master’s in forensic toxicology, while the Toledo Lucas County Public Library will offer enhanced $5 ID cards in early 2026 to support residents without state IDs. Other updates include Saturday Morning Chess returning at the Main Library, a 50th anniversary tribute for the Edmund Fitzgerald on November 10 with a panel discussion and bell tolling, and the play Silent Sky presenting Henrietta Leavitt’s story from November 14–17 at the Center for Performing Arts.  Toledo City Paper
  • Students at Toledo Technology Academy of Engineering held a luncheon on Friday to thank local veterans—honoring their service and showing strong community support.  WTOL
  • The YMCA of Greater Toledo signed a purchase agreement for a 53,000 square foot facility—located on North Holland-Sylvania Road—and will close on the property by year end if approvals come through. The expansion aims to meet strong community demand shown by 160 daily childcare enrollees and over 800 summer campers.  WTVG
  • The Toledo Zoo hosts a weekly contest where Dodge the Kodiak bear (1,236 pounds) and Kirkja the elephant calf (1,240 pounds) are compared, with Kirkja having won three of the four weigh-ins. The next Junk vs (Trunk) video will drop on Nov. 12 to see if Dodge will bulk up before winter.  WTOL
  • Local organizers announced that the annual Veterans Appreciation Breakfast and Resource Fair will be held next week to honor Veterans Day — offering a chance for veterans to be recognized for their service.  WTOL
  • A Toledo veteran was named as one of 100 nationwide to receive a new car in the Keys to Progress giveaway (the program was announced yesterday to honor service and provide transportation support).  WTVG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Avestruz restaurant in Ostrich Towne closed suddenly and left employees with little notice and no pay. An employee said the abrupt shutdown has left workers facing uncertainty.  WTOL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Author Robin Yocum will join readers for a discussion about her book A Perfect Shot at Wine & Words on November 11 at Earnest Brew Works, 4342 S. Detroit Ave at 6:30 p.m. The 2025 Art Book Sale will run at the UT Center for Visual Arts from November 13 to 15, and the NW Ohio Jewish Book Festival was held on November 2 at 6465 Sylvania Ave to celebrate local stories.  Toledo City Paper

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Due to the government shutdown, Toledo residents did not receive their SNAP benefits last Saturday and are quickly using other aid to cover their food costs. Tracy Jones—who normally gets SNAP on the first of each month—said she will soon run out of food and must make tough choices with November bills coming.  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Blake Morant, a professor and former dean of George Washington University Law School, will speak on civil engagement during UToledo's College of Law Toledo Way Series at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 12 — the event will discuss the role of civic participation in society.  The University of Toledo
  • At UToledo, Dr. Barbara Ritter, dean of the Neff College of Business, discussed how artificial intelligence is changing business and sports during a workshop—she said an upcoming event will feature the Cleveland Cavaliers' AI solutions architect.  The University of Toledo

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Lattes and Littles in Sylvania opened this summer as an indoor play cafe for kids and a coffee spot for parents, owned by Kim Lishewski and her daughter Taylor. Reservations are required for two-hour play sessions that feature a ball pit, trampoline, slide and toddler zone (with coffee and dirty soda available) to help families enjoy time together.  WTVG

SPORTS NEWS

  • UToledo head football coach Jason Candle outlined his team's strategy for their upcoming road trip to Miami OH — his remarks came after the Rockets improved their record to 5-4 with a 42-3 win over Northern Illinois on Wednesday. The coach said the team will build on that performance in the next contest.  WTOL
