COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Paws and People Pantry in Toledo has a hard time keeping food available for both people and pets after it had to close for a day due to shortages—owner Brooke Winkelman says local donations and volunteer help are easing the strain. The pantry now serves more families who have returned after not needing help earlier this year.  WTVG
  • The Salvation Army is asking the Toledo community to help Lucas County families celebrate Christmas by providing toys for children 12 and younger and food assistance for teens as more residents are expected to need support this season. Residents must bring a government-issued photo ID, birth certificates, proof of address, and apply in downtown Toledo at Erie Street from 9 a.m.—noon and 1 p.m.—3 p.m. on select days this week and Nov. 10, 12, 13 and 14.  WTVG
  • For thousands of families, food assistance is key to avoiding empty plates. Local food banks & pantries are facing a surge in demand that may soon exceed available supplies.  WTVG

  • I.M. Jaffe Jewelers will open in December in the former U.S. Post Office building at 117 East Second Street in Perrysburg — Ivan and Michelle Jaffe plan to revive the family business by offering fine jewelry, repairs, and hands-on design workshops while restoring the historic venue. CRIME NEWS

  • Early Monday morning, staff at Paws and Whiskers Cat Shelter in Toledo found two adult cats left in a small carrier outside in dropping temperatures—camera footage showed a car and a person in black and the shelter sent the evidence to law enforcement.  WTVG

  • The African American Legacy Project plans to create the Art Tatum Historic Business District+ the project will revitalize the neighborhood where the jazz legend grew up.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A third grade Girl Scout troop from Highland Elementary visited WTOL 11 to earn their Democracy badge—learning firsthand how a news station operates on Election Day.  WTOL
  • Christian Karim, a second-year law student, chose UToledo’s College of Law because a friendly community helped him get back into school after three years off—he worked hard in an externship and joined law student groups that built his confidence. He will return to a prosecutor’s office next summer and may study health law given his public health background.  The University of Toledo
  • Voters in Perrysburg passed a five-year emergency operating levy that will provide about $11 million each year for schools, reversing last fall's failed proposal that resulted in over 50 job cuts. The measure is meant to maintain current operations — though the district will not rehire the positions lost previously.  WTVG
  • Blake Morant (former dean of George Washington University Law School) will deliver a free lecture on professional conduct on Nov.12 at noon at McQuade Law Auditorium at the University of Toledo College of Law; he will explain how technology and individualism are reducing civil engagement and undermining the rule of law.  The University of Toledo

  • Commissioners approved a $100K allocation for Lucas County food banks—after the original $1 million motion by Commissioner Anita Lopez failed—ensuring support for local relief efforts.  WTOL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Adrianna Swan, a 37-year-old who was jailed repeatedly for addiction, is now a peer support specialist at New Concepts Behavioral Health Center and has been sober for 15 months. She is taking social work courses to help others overcome addiction — using her own struggles to guide those in need.  WTVG
  • UToledo professor Dr. Peter Andreana received nearly $400,000 from the National Institute on Aging to study L-rhamnose’s antioxidant role in fighting Alzheimer’s disease—he and his team will use microwave-assisted chemistry with engineering and pharmacy collaborators to create specific molecules for testing. The research aims to boost cell protection to lower brain cell damage linked to the disease.  The University of Toledo
