COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lucas County Canine Care and Control is collecting dry dog food to help families facing SNAP cuts and financial hardship — donations can be dropped off at its Monroe Street facility, said interim director Terra Bundy.  WTVG
  • The Rotary Club of Toledo provided a one-time emergency grant on Friday, October 31st to help local food assistance programs—supporting efforts to ease food shortages in the area.  WTOL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A car crashed into the former Mugshots bar at the corner of Summit and Lagrange during a police pursuit over the weekend—officials said the building will be demolished.  WTOL

CULTURE NEWS

  • The National Museum of the Great Lakes will host events from Friday, Nov. 7 through Monday, Nov. 10 to honor the 29 crew members lost on the Edmund Fitzgerald on Nov. 10, 1975 — the weekend features a brewery release, a maritime book signing, a tribute concert, guided tours, film screenings and a panel ceremony marking the exact moment of the sinking.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A donation from several local foundations totaling $170,000 will send students from Oakdale and other east Toledo schools to a week-long YMCA camp.  WTOL
  • The Josh Project began its fall swim lessons on Nov 2 to help kids ages five to 17 learn water safety and build confidence in the pool. Families and coaches say the sessions are helping kids overcome their fear of water and gain important life-saving skills.  WTVG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An eighth grader is launching a composting program at his school to help sustain the environment. The initiative will teach students to recycle organic waste and promote greener habits.  WTVG
  • The Sisters of St Francis began installing solar panels at Lourdes University near Russell J. Ebeid Hall as part of a $5 million project announced on Earth Day that is set to finish by the end of the year. The initiative, carried out with help from Elevated Energy, will reduce carbon emissions by 328.2 metric tons annually—saving $63,000 each year and reinforcing their long-term commitment to environmental sustainability.  Toledo Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Three northwest Ohio agencies have pledged nearly $200,000—supporting families during the federal shutdown—by providing funds to offset food costs as SNAP benefits remain withheld, and agency staff have started internal drives to ease pressure on food pantries.  WTVG
  • Toledo’s Jobs with Justice is offering free rides to poll sites in Lucas County and Northern Wood County during election season—volunteers will drive voters to the polls and return them home after they vote.  WTVG
  • Toledo residents relying on food stamps are facing delays as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will deliver benefits soon — authorities say it will take extra time for aid to reach recipients.  WTVG
  • The City of Toledo is once again offering its Snow Angels program to help residents who are unable to shovel snow when it begins to fall—residents are encouraged to sign up following the city’s instructions.  WTOL

SPORTS NEWS

  • Toledo’s Men’s Cross Country team won their second consecutive MAC championship in Buffalo on Saturday — they finished with 58 points to beat Miami by 22 points, and Joad Martinho won the individual title in 23:48.5. Associate Head Coach Louis Vazquez was named Coach of the Year and the team will compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Evansville on Nov. 14.  The University of Toledo
  • On Saturday in Buffalo, junior Karina James won the individual race as Toledo captured its fifth straight MAC women’s cross country championship and 11th title with a team score of 32 points — Ohio finished with 62. Head Coach Andrea Grove-McDonough was named MAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time and Toledo will compete at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Evansville on Friday, Nov 14.  The University of Toledo
