COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over 100 local residents gathered Monday at the Chet Zablocki Recreation Center in Polish Village to brainstorm the center's future — the meeting focused on sharing ideas for improvements and new community uses.  The Blade
  • Food banks and pantries in Toledo are preparing for more demand if SNAP benefits are paused next month, with centers like Brown Bag Food Project and Helping Hands of St. Louis reporting long lines and rising phone calls for assistance. The Northwestern Ohio Foodbank said member agencies might face harder challenges and urged community support—local organizers want help to keep shelves stocked as needs grow.  WTVG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Schmucker’s Restaurant closed in August due to a fire and now plans to reopen in November with the earliest date being Nov. 17—its bakers will bake over 1,300 pies for Thanksgiving on a first-come, first-served basis.  WTVG

  • Jeff Daniels—renowned actor and musician—will perform his one-of-a-kind show at the Valentine Theatre in Toledo on Nov. 22 where he will sing, play guitar and share personal stories from his long career. The 70-year-old will deliver a blend of music and narrative that highlights his early passion for acoustic guitar and his dedication to his craft.  Toledo Free Press

ECONOMY NEWS

  • At the Lucas County Commissioners meeting on Oct. 7, Mark Frye said electricity rates rose from 6.3 to 9.75 cents per kilowatt hour so that an average customer will pay an extra $250 to $300 a year. He explained that rising demand from AI data centers and the end of a long-term contract are straining the grid and will burden consumers for the next few years.  Toledo Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Toledo College of Law ranked second among the state’s nine law schools in its first-time bar passage rate—UT announced Tuesday.  The Blade
  • Pre-K through eighth-grade students at East Broadway Elementary School held a mock election on Monday—voting to choose a new mascot for their school. The event gave young voters a real chance to practice making decisions.  The Blade
  • St. Ursula Academy celebrated the grand opening of its new state-of-the-art fitness center (which now provides weight training equipment) and senior Molly Malone, a volleyball team member, said students can now train with weights for better practice.  The Blade
  • Perrysburg school board member Sue Larimer was named to the All-Ohio School Board by the Ohio School Boards Association—she is one of five members recognized each year for her service.  The Blade

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Toledoan woman remains stranded in Jamaica as Hurricane Melissa makes landfall today. Shannon Cousino is staying at a hotel in Montego Bay and hotel staff advised her to take safety measures—her flight home scheduled for November 1 is now uncertain.  WTVG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nightingale’s Harvest, a food pantry serving cancer patients and their families, is facing supplies shortages as donations drop and potential SNAP freezes loom. The nonprofit, based at (2820 West Alexis Road) in Toledo, is urging the community to donate food, money, or supplies to help keep its services running.  WTVG

  • Braden Awls did not record a turnover in his first season with Toledo football and over the last two seasons he has become known for his interceptions — a change that is boosting the team’s defense.  The Blade
