COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Matthew Mayle, a senior at St. Francis de Sales, organized a backyard rock paper scissors game that raised funds to feed hungry kids—drawing strong local support and proving how a simple game can help the community.  The Blade
  • Danberry Realtors hosted its 30th annual Treasure Chest event last Thursday in Stranahan Theater Great Hall, raising $135,000 for needy families.  The Blade

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce president said that despite ongoing uncertainty, he envisions a positive outlook for local business growth and expects plans that will boost company development in Toledo + strengthen the regional economy. The chamber plans to support initiatives that help shape Toledo’s business future.  WTOL

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Toledo Yacht Club, a 117-year-old building is drawing visitors for ghost tours this week as trustee David Kiel recounted eerie sightings plus unexplained events such as a bartender serving a drink to a vanished past commodore. Visitors joined tours with paranormal experts last weekend and another tour is planned for Saturday amid Spooky Season events.  WTVG
  • Today, the Toledo Lucas County Public Library’s McMaster Center will host a free screening of the film To Kill a War Machine from 6–8 p.m. with a Q&A session featuring opening remarks by Cindy Matthews + an update from Zach Dempster.  Toledo Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • East Broadway Elementary held a mock election on Monday to choose a garden mascot from candidates including a squirrel, groundhog, duck, bird, and garden spider - the event was part of the social studies curriculum. The electronic vote, organized with Kids Voting Ohio, taught students practical lessons in civic engagement as they celebrated the Big Green Garden used for science, cooking, and teamwork.  WTOL
  • A high school junior in Toledo was honored as this week’s Rising Star for ranking in the top 10 percent of her class while staying active in her church community. The story was introduced by a 13 Action News anchor and shows how her faith has played a key role in her school success.  WTVG
  • The University of Toledo will sponsor Great Lakes AI Week, with certification workshops on Nov. 4, a discussion on AI in sports on Nov. 5, and an AI in Healthcare Symposium on Nov. 7, set to offer expert insight to local professionals and students. Toledo leaders and UToledo faculty will lead panels and workshops at Main and Health Science Campuses—bringing together academic and business experts for a free week-long event.  The University of Toledo
  • A Fulton County family said a school counselor asked for a note explaining why their elementary daughter did not stand for the Pledge of Allegiance — a move the mother said breached her child's constitutional rights. The Ohio ACLU stated that students are protected by the First Amendment and that the district has no authority to force participation.  WTVG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lucas County declared November Correct Recycling Month and students from Toledo Public Schools and Toledo School for the Arts kicked it off at Jamie Farr Park on Monday — a move that will boost proper recycling habits across the county.  WTOL

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Ohio High School Athletic Association released first-round playoff pairings for high school football with games set for Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m.—the top four teams in each region will get a bye as the playoffs shift to a 12-team format.  WTOL
  • Toledo area's girls volleyball, boys soccer, and girls soccer teams will play in regional semifinal contests this week—each game will decide which local team advances.  The Blade
