COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Window World donated and installed over 30 new windows on Wednesday at H.O.O.V.E.S. Equine Sanctuary & Healing Center for Veterans and First Responders to improve the nonprofit's facility for local veterans and first responders.  WTOL
  • Lucas County Children’s Services will host a Trunk or Treat on Oct. 18 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Believe Center—where over 75 decorated trunks, a Halloween makerspace, and about 250,000 pieces of candy will give local children and families a safe, daytime trick-or-treat option.  WTVG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Whirlpool Corp. will invest $300 million to expand its Clyde plant — the expansion will add hundreds of new jobs and boost production at the world's largest washing machine factory. The project is expected to start soon and will help grow the local workforce in northwest Ohio.  The Blade
  • Whirlpool said it will invest $300 million to increase production at its Clyde and Marion facilities—this move is expected to create new jobs and boost domestic operations.  WTOL
  • Barry Bagels owner/CEO James Nusbaum announced the company will expand into Iowa by developing 20 stores as part of an agreement with the state—its first location will be revealed in coming weeks and the chain will grow to over 100 shops across six states.  WTOL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Toledo School for the Arts is hosting American Idol alum Crystal Bowersox for an acoustic show today at 7 p.m. at The Portal—Crystal returns to her hometown and alma mater to preview new songs.  WTOL
  • Jazz vocalist Sunny Wilkinson will perform at 7 p.m. at the UToledo Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall on October 22 for the Jon Hendricks Memorial Jazz Scholarship Concert, which raises funds for a scholarship for jazz students — an event honoring local legend Jon Hendricks.  The University of Toledo
  • The Toledo Zoo is hosting its annual Harvest Fest throughout October with giant pumpkin displays, fall foods including loaded sweet potato mac and cheese, and interactive events for all ages. The celebration honors the zoo’s 125th anniversary as well as a decade since the aquarium was renovated, with new themed installations by local partner Ice Creations—making it a festive tradition for Toledo residents.  Toledo Free Press
  • Starting in 2026, the Crosby Festival of the Arts will move from the Toledo Botanical Garden to the Schedel Arboretum and Gardens in Elmore and change its date from June to the first weekend in October as it marks its 60th year — organizers say the new schedule will help avoid summer heat and unpredictable weather. Toledo GROWs noted that the change will allow it to focus on urban farming and community education while Schedel Gardens takes over management.  WTOL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Stellantis announced a $400 million investment in Toledo Assembly Complex that will add production of a new midsize truck and create over 900 jobs—set to launch in 2028—and the move has boosted hopes among workers—especially those affected by recent layoffs. This investment expands the plant’s role, which already produces Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator models.  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UToledo hosted the Toledo STEM Goes Red event — a program created with the American Heart Association — to encourage girls to explore STEM careers in a field where women hold only 29% of the positions.  WTOL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A climatologist said that the drought in northwest Ohio is one of the worst in recent memory and compared it to the drought of 1988—dry conditions continue across the region.  WTOL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Zepf Center has opened Our Haven Youth Crisis Stabilization Unit to give local youth up to age 17 short-term help with emotional distress and behavioral challenges. The center offers 24/7 crisis care in a calm, trauma-informed space — with individual bedrooms, a schoolwork area, and low-stimulation rooms to support stabilization and ongoing care.  WTVG
