COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In the spirit of Halloween, the Toledo Police Department’s SWAT team visited a children’s hospital and climbed the building in costume to entertain young patients—adding a fun twist to their annual visit. The event showed the team’s effort to spread cheer during the festive season.  WTOL
  • Larry Crawford said his fence was removed when a neighboring home was demolished, leaving him unable to let his dog out while he awaits a repair solution. The City of Toledo is reviewing the incident—promising a full assessment and timely repair or compensation for his damage.  WTVG
  • Stef Klages started the Toledo Listening Room to build community with free monthly open mic events at Handmade Toledo and Black Kite Coffee where local artists share music, poetry, and art—events are scheduled for Oct. 14th, Oct. 28th, and Nov. 11th. CULTURE NEWS

  • Midstory is a nonprofit founded in 2018 by four Toledoans who returned after earning degrees to boost the local narrative by offering multimedia storytelling, research initiatives, and summer internships that have served about 200 students. The group has upcoming projects such as an online exhibit with the Toledo History Museum—highlighting local manufacturing and innovation—and a new podcast to explore brain drain and population loss.  Toledo Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local superintendents spoke out yesterday against HB186 — warning that the bill would cut up to $3 million from each district and risk staff, extracurriculars, and bussing; they noted that these changes would force schools to seek new funding as a vote is set for later this month.  WTVG
  • University of Toledo seniors Trip Floyd and Asa Kridelbaugh were honored at the Press Club of Toledo Touchstone Awards—Floyd won in the Student: Radio or Podcast category and Kridelbaugh received the Kurt G.   • UToledo will celebrate its 19th president James Holloway with an inauguration on Oct. 16 at Savage Arena; a procession will begin at 2:30 p.m. from the Thompson Student Union and the free event will include a reception afterward — campus gatherings on Oct. 13 and Oct. 15 will add to the celebrations.  The University of Toledo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov Mike DeWine signed an executive order on Wednesday banning the sale of intoxicating hemp products for 90 days and requiring retailers to remove them by October 14 or face a $500 daily fine. The order aims to protect children from items that mimic candy—like Stoner Patch Gummies—and will be revisited by lawmakers later.  WTOL
  • Toledo City Council bid farewell to Carrie Hartman at her last voting meeting as she will leave on Oct. 17 to join the University of Toledo as director of Government Relations starting Oct. 20—council members praised her leadership and wished her well in her new role.  WTOL
  • Ohio lawmakers have proposed bills to ban DEI programs in K-12 public schools—schools must shut down DEI offices and courses instead of renaming them, with districts given 90 days to comply if the law passes. Supporters say the change will help teachers focus on fundamentals while a group of critics vows to oppose the measure.  WTVG
  • A proposed Ohio bill would ban wage garnishment for medical debt — it would also cap interest rates at 3% instead of the current 8% to help protect former patients.  WTVG
  • Emily Desmond confirmed her race for Toledo City Council after posting verification from the Lucas County Board of Elections on her campaign Facebook page.  WTOL

  • Residents at Executive Towers met with management to ask if they should stay after nearly all tenants were told to leave two months ago for water damage and mold; management said repairs will start on Oct 20—contractors will fix the roof and chiller pipes—leaving residents unsure about their safe living conditions.  WTVG
