COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A Toledo woman teamed up with Cherry Street Mission to bring free haircuts to shelter residents — local stylists volunteer their skills to help those in need. WTOL
- ➤ Communities in NW Ohio and SE Michigan have shared trick-or-treat schedules for Halloween—Toledo will host trick-or-treating on Oct. 31 from 6-8 p.m. while other towns plan events from Oct. 23 to Nov. 1 and more times will be added as available. WTVG
- ➤ The Oregon Fire Department will host an open house—inviting local residents to learn about fire safety—and offer hands-on demonstrations to help everyone prepare for emergencies. WTOL
- ➤ On Monday, the old Saint Anthony Church in the Junction neighborhood will start its $6 million transformation into a multipurpose community recreation center—supported by federal grants and funds from the city of Toledo and Lucas County. - ➤ Friends of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge is hosting a virtual gala from October 12th through 18th to raise funds and support the eleven thousand acre refuge that remains open with limited services amid the federal shutdown. The refuge’s visitor center and bathrooms are closed today — temporary portable toilets may soon be offered and donations through the friends group can help maintain its natural habitat. WTVG

- ➤ Downtown Toledo intersections now have nonoperational traffic lights that flash red and show unclear signals — leaving drivers to wonder if they must stop as cross traffic remains unsignaled. In city politics, union endorsements are being used to punish incumbents, as seen when firefighters backed mayoral candidate Roberto Torres and voters are urged to cast bullet votes in the contest for six City Council seats ahead of early voting starting on October 7. - ➤ Anthony Wayne area voters will see many choices on the ballot as local school board, township trustee and village council races feature several contests—some with many candidates and others with only one.
