COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sylvania Township’s annual Border Battle Food Drive returns and will run until Nov. 14. The donation table at Township Hall at 4927 Holland-Sylvania Road accepts nonperishable food items Monday — Friday from 8 a.m. — 4:30 p.m.—it will be closed on Oct. 13 for Columbus Day and Nov. 11 for Veterans Day.  WTVG
  • Down Syndrome Association of Greater Toledo is hosting its annual Buddy Walk this Sunday at Owens Community College to support people with Down syndrome, and organizers expect many to join the event in Toledo.  WTOL
  • Waterville’s Zion Lutheran Endowment Fund awarded $160,000 in its 21st annual series of grants to 20 nonprofits, including Let’s Build Beds, Otsego Food Pantry, and Mobile Meals of Toledo — supporting projects from beds for children to improved kitchen equipment and school security. The fund, which has allocated $2,462,000 since 2005, continues its long commitment to community needs — with the latest awards announced in 2025.  Toledo Free Press
  • The 38th annual National Philanthropy Day will honor community changemakers on November 12. Hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals — a national group — the event will spotlight local leaders who work to improve Toledo.  WTOL
  • The Fair Housing Center celebrates 50 years of advocacy and hope today as it honors its legacy of helping Toledo families in challenging housing conditions. BUSINESS NEWS

  • Union workers at Libbey Glass have been striking for 41 days as the company faces its longest labor action in 50 years — Toledo's mayor and a city council member joined the picket line Thursday to show support.   • Toledo Opera previewed upcoming Carmen performances scheduled for October 10 and October 12; actor Brendan Boyle (who portrays Don José) performed a piece from the opera.  WTOL

  • Today, fall harvest is underway across the Buckeye State but drought conditions are making work difficult for local farmers—many report that the dry weather is challenging their usual routines.  WTVG

  • Local experts say that even with the government shutdown, students can fill out the FAFSA online to secure college aid and should file early as key deadlines like Nov. 1 approach—Toledo Tomorrow has helped many local students secure millions in scholarship funds.  WTVG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is moving ahead with plans to use wetlands to reduce harmful algal blooms — despite a 55% cut in its H2Ohio funding. Officials say the agency will expand projects to protect local waterways.  The Blade

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lucas County property owners have received over $4.6 million in refunds after the board nearly finished its review of property values—an auditor confirmed that most revisions are complete.  The Blade
  • Waterville will use a $557,000 federal grant to build a scenic overlook and pedestrian walkway using two piers from the Roche de Boeuf Interurban Bridge—construction is set to begin in 2028. Whitehouse has been awarded a $1,447,872 grant to build a 7,700-foot trail from Anthony Wayne High School to downtown—village funds must be matched by 2030.  Toledo Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Solace Health opened this August at 4231 Monroe St. in Toledo and offers services such as gynecological care, fertility support, and wellness counseling. Certified nurse midwife Erin Marten leads the practice and started the Seeking Solace Birthwork Justice Program—providing scholarships for aspiring doulas and midwives and free childbirth classes—to help patients receive longer, personalized care.  Toledo Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • Woodmore and North Baltimore high school football teams won key games this week—showing strong performance on the field—while a former local athlete shared his career insights in a recent update on WTOL 11 Sports. The report focuses on local high school football success and its impact on community sports.  WTOL
  • North Baltimore High School football is 6-0 under coach Greg Bishop, marking the first undefeated start since 1995 — the team now ranks in the top ten and will travel to Ridgedale tonight as it pushes for a Northwest Central Conference title and deep playoff run. The Tigers lead with a dominant spread offense that wins games by an average margin of 37.6 points.  WTOL
