COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brown Bag Food Project in Bowling Green faced food shortages after funding cuts reduced its ability to stock shelves, and the organization needed community help. Yark Automotive group donated $1,300 to help buy meat, dairy, eggs and hygiene products — support that comes as the pantry works to serve families each month.  WTVG
  • Johnston Fruit Farms will host its Apples for Everyone event on Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—volunteers will pick apples to be donated to local food banks and help set up games, live music, and snacks for a family-friendly day. Participants can sign up in advance or join as walk-ins to give back by sharing their time.  Toledo Free Press
  • Toledo City Council approved New Covenant Church’s project to transform an old building in north Toledo into the New Step Family Center, which will expand the church’s aid programs including outreach at Spring Elementary and food bank help—work is underway that will have the center open next spring.  WTVG
  • The Reynolds Corners Rotary Club will host a fundraising luncheon on October 21 at Epiphany Lutheran Church from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.—aiming to raise $2,500 for Schmucker’s employees affected by the August fire—and all proceeds will help cover their bills until the restaurant reopens.  WTVG

  • Ridge and River is opening its second northwest Ohio location in Perrysburg's Levis Commons shopping center at 4170 Levis Way — shown between Lily's and Blue Pacific Grill—and the store, which first opened downtown in May 2023, is expected to open in November.  WTOL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Toledo Museum of Art is hosting Glass Harvest — a display that looks like a pumpkin patch made of glass — as part of its creative art program, with Heather Blankenship explaining the project on Good Day on WTOL 11. The exhibit shows how art can transform everyday ideas into striking visual installations.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UToledo announced that new Michigan undergraduates starting in Fall 2026 will pay in-state tuition like Ohioans, saving about $4,680 per semester+ the program, which began in Monroe County+ now covers all Michigan students.  The University of Toledo
  • Laila Fitzpatrick, an alum of the Y.E.S. program, celebrated her white coat ceremony in August at UToledo as she works toward a pharmacy degree and a minor in business administration—she said the program helped her build networking skills. The program, started in 2017 with Toledo Public Schools, has placed about 120 students in college and now hosts career workshops and employer visits to prepare high schoolers for future opportunities.  The University of Toledo
  • UToledo’s Board of Trustees approved an online master’s degree in forensic toxicology that will be offered in Fall 2026 pending approval from the Ohio Department of Higher Education—making it the first program of its kind in Ohio.  The University of Toledo

  • Lucas County Child Protection Task Force has identified eight urgent areas and split into groups—meeting Wednesday night to set goals for two of them. The team will complete its work and issue a final report by summer 2026.  WTVG
  • The Rossford Fire Department no longer struggles with staffing and is hiring more full-time firefighters today — Fire Chief Richard Syroka said this change will help meet growing community needs.  WTOL

HEALTH NEWS

  • On September 22, Dr. Dionis Kononov— a UToledo Health psychiatrist— explained that researchers were studying how leaded gasoline’s legacy may contribute to dementia.  The University of Toledo

  • Berger’s Old Tyme Bar & Grille in Toledo is a Miracle Mile staple owned by Elaine Heiss since 1993. Today, general manager Kevin Plueard demonstrates how to make the All-American Burger — piled high with five slices of bacon — while patrons sample a build-your-own burger, a Reuben, a breakfast sandwich, and the specialty Toledo Original, THE LENNY.  WTVG
