- ➤ Toledo Opera and Handmade Toledo—two local groups—will host Unmasking Carmen, a free event with a live performance and panel discussion about Bizet’s Carmen at 5:30 p.m. on Sept 30 at Handmade Toledo 1717 Adams St. The program will lead into a full production of Carmen at the Valentine Theatre on Oct 10 and Oct 12. - ➤ Quenched and Tempered Brewery will debut its commemorative copper ale The Toledo Express—named for the ship’s regional nickname—on Nov. 7 to honor the Edmund Fitzgerald and its 29 lost crew members. - ➤ Perrysburg school board members voted to cut high school busing and sports if the levy fails (Nov. 4) and will reduce the budget by $6 million, which may affect student programs. The Blade
- ➤ UToledo was ranked among the nation’s best colleges on the 2026 U.S. News list after moving up three spots to 293 of 434 national universities selected from over 2,600 schools. It ranks 159 among 225 public universities and is one of only two Ohio public schools to improve its rank — a rise linked to better peer assessments, graduation, and retention rates. - ➤ Toledo Public Schools has opened the new DeVilbiss Wellness Room at Toledo Technology Academy of Engineering and Toledo Pre-Medical and Health Science Academy—students can now use this facility to support their health. WTOL
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Toledo Police Department received a $102,252 grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to address traffic safety issues in the city— the funds will help improve enforcement on risky roads. The Blade
- ➤ Ohio will enforce a new law that bans police and deputy citation and arrest quotas starting Sept. 30th—departments must no longer require officers to meet ticket or arrest targets. Law enforcement unions backed the law and instructed officers to report any quota practices to the Ohio Attorney General’s office. WTVG
- ➤ Toledo partnered with the Corps to secure $10M in waterline funding to protect tap water from threats such as algal blooms and climate change—officials said the project will improve water safety in the coming months. The Blade
