COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The University of Toledo Police Department is partnering with campus offices for the Rocket Re-Fuel Food Drive during Faith and Blue, an event running through October that benefits student food pantries on Main and Health Science campuses. Campus offices must sign up as sponsors by placing a collection box in a visible area by Monday, Sept 29—winners will earn a framed certificate and bragging rights.  The University of Toledo
  • The Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments, known as TMACOG, invites residents from northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan to share views on a regional Active Transportation Plan aimed at improving sidewalks, bike lanes, crosswalks, and paths—feedback is welcomed through community events, public meetings, or an online survey open until October 31. Toledo’s Mott Branch Library will hold sessions on September 23 while additional opportunities will be available at local farmers markets and other library branches.  Toledo City Paper

  • Independent Toledo coffee shops are challenging big chains—such as Starbucks and Scooter’s—by offering unique blends and local events to attract customers.  The Blade

CULTURE NEWS

  • Earlier this week, members of Toledo’s B-Team Bike Club gathered at Levis Square and rode through downtown to celebrate the city’s bike culture—founded by Ernest Turner and driven by calls for safer bike lanes after a recent fatality.  Toledo City Paper

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the UT college career expo, Mike Livingston—a senior preconstruction manager at Rudolph Libbe Group—talked with engineering students while many hopeful students and employers gathered to explore job opportunities.  The Blade

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On August 6, a 2-hour cruise from Toledo Yacht Club raised public awareness of harmful algal blooms and phosphorus runoff in Lake Erie as Lake Erie Waterkeeper led the event with around 60 participants including Rep. Marcy Kaptur, State Senator Paula Hicks Hudson, and Professor Bridgeman. The group sampled water and noted average bloom conditions — a sign that stronger pollution controls are needed to protect the lake that provides drinking water for millions.  Toledo City Paper

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City crews are fixing a sewer collapse on Arlington Avenue that caused two sinkholes, and officials now plan to replace the sewer line for $16 million with work set to finish in June 2026—nearly double the original estimate.  WTVG
  • St. Anthony Church in Toledo’s Junction neighborhood sent its special use permit to City Council—clearing the last hurdle before it can operate as a community center.  The Blade

  • Today, Anthony Wayne's trio of big hitters led the Generals to sweep rival Perrysburg in a key volleyball match — the players built momentum and maintained control throughout the game.  The Blade
  • The University of Toledo is set to host its first women's rowing event—giving female rowers a new chance to join the sport. Ava Cook changed her plans from other schools to help launch the program.  The Blade
