COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Freshman engineering student Tyreese Blue II was selected as Ohio Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls Clubs for his volunteer work in Toledo—his efforts include support for literacy programs and community meals that inspire change. He will begin his studies at UToledo this fall to pursue construction engineering technology while planning to start his own firm to help families in need.  The University of Toledo
  • Toledo’s zoning committee approved proposals for two new community centers—one will transform the former St. Anthony Church in Junction into a multi-purpose space with bathrooms, a kitchenette, and parking while New Covenant Church will expand its facility into a family center for community programs. Both proposals now head to City Council for final approval.  WTOL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • About 30 employers will hold a job fair at Main Library at 325 N. Michigan Street on Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. as recruiters help locals explore work offered by businesses & government agencies.  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Imagination Station Education Manager Eryn Barwinski said the museum will soon open the Traveling Bricks exhibit and invite visitors to explore fun engineering projects & interactive activities. This exhibit aims to spark creativity and hands-on learning for all ages.  WTOL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Experts say the number of invasive spotted lanternflies is rising in Toledo as the insects, which arrived from Pennsylvania, begin mating and affect local trees—officials expect more counties to join the quarantine list soon.  WTVG
  • Roger Myers (a beekeeper with 30 years of experience who owns about 100 hives) said that heavy rain early in summer followed by drought has reduced nectar in local goldenrods and other flowers needed for his final honey harvest as he prepares for winter.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mental Health & Recovery Services Board of Lucas County is asking Toledo residents to complete a survey that will decide how millions in opioid settlement funds will be used for addiction prevention, treatment and recovery services. The survey is open until Sept. 30.  WTVG
  • Ohio Department of Aging Director Ursel McElroy was named President of ADvancing States’ Board of Directors at the HCBS Conference in Baltimore this week—she had previously served as vice president, secretary and treasurer—and will now lead the group of 56 state and territorial agencies focused on aging and disability services.  Toledo Legal News
  • The League of Women Voters is holding a voter registration event at local universities to help residents prepare for the upcoming general election. Registration will end on Oct. 6—residents are urged to sign up before then.  WTOL

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Ellen Jackson Ovarian Cancer Walk will take place Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – it will raise money and increase awareness for ovarian cancer in the community.  WTOL

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Lucas County officials signed a pre-development agreement with RKP Group to revitalize the historic Spitzer and Nicholas buildings near Huron - Madison by creating 400 new apartments and commercial office space. The project began with interior demolition last month and will continue in stages through spring.  WTVG

SPORTS NEWS

  • Toledo-born Stacy Lewis announced her retirement from the LPGA on Wednesday after 17 years on the tour and said she will finish out the season as her last; the 40-year-old — a 13-time winner with two major championships — thanked her fans and encouraged fellow players to keep advancing the tour. This marks the end of a long career that began in 2009 and included many memorable wins.  WTOL
  • The University of Toledo Women’s Rowing program will make its debut—at the Glass City Regatta on Saturday, Sept 20 on the Maumee River, giving local fans their first look at a team of both seasoned rowers and newcomers. Head coach Chris Bailey-Greene said the team is building a culture that stresses teamwork as it prepares for upcoming events in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Indianapolis.  The University of Toledo
