- ➤ Empty Bowls 2025 will take place on Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Toledo Botanical Garden, 5403 Elmer Drive, where guests will pay $35 for soups from local restaurants served in handcrafted bowls by Toledo Potters Guild. - ➤ Toledo freshman Tyreese Blue II—a construction engineering technology major at UToledo—was named National Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls Clubs for his volunteer work and leadership. - ➤ Ohio singers will have a chance to audition live with an American Idol producer via Zoom on Friday, September 19 as part of the virtual 'Idol Across America' tour—now in its sixth year. - ➤ Springfield Local Schools partnered with Maumee Valley Adventurers to launch the Cycling Without Age program in the district—students now enjoy adaptive bikes that offer a safe and inclusive way to ride. WTOL
- ➤ Toledo School for the Arts has launched a Museum Studies course—this new program was inspired by a visit to the Duke Ellington School for the Arts in Washington D.C. and aims to bring younger students into museum work. WTOL

- ➤ Hundreds of people are gathering at the AOC Cross-Agency Partnership Summit in Toledo this week to work with federal, state and local partners on restoring the Maumee Area of Concern plus a $13 million project near Walbridge Park shows the success of efforts to improve water quality and wildlife habitat. - ➤ A local company admitted to thousands of Clean Water Act violations on September 16 — a move that could mark a turning point in efforts to restore the Lake Erie watershed. WTVG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Sept. 15, the Administrative Board of Zoning Appeals upheld a non-compliance notice against Rocky Ridge Development for mining on residential property near Angola Road and South Byrne Avenue. The company said it plans to close the site and prepare it for agriculture—while city officials noted that materials removed from the property still violate mining rules. Toledo Free Press
- ➤ ODOT District 2 said roadwork projects are wrapping up this construction season and explained that work sites are picked to lower environmental harm—officials detailed the process to ensure a careful selection. WTOL
- ➤ County commissioners approved a contract on Sept. 16 to hire an engineering firm that will plan repairs to fix leaks in Lucas County Jail’s basement. Engineers estimated the work could cost between $1.4 and $1.6 million and reported that while the jail is not in immediate danger, loose concrete could fall—construction is set to begin in early 2026.
