COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Connecting Kids to Meals and Kroger will host a meal packing event for families in need on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. at the Home Run Terrace of Fifth Third Field—supporting access to meals during Hunger Action Month.  WTOL
  • Veterans will join the Flag City Honor Flight in September to visit Washington, D.C.—they will share emotional stories as they view monuments and memorials during the trip.  WTOL
  • Ohio Kroger stores will host the Heroes Fight Hunger food drive on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—first responders and law enforcement agencies will collect donations for local food banks during Hunger Action Month.  Spectrum News 1

CULTURE NEWS

  • Award-winning actor Jeff Daniels will perform an evening of music, stories and laughter on Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Valentine Theatre in downtown Toledo. Tickets will go on sale for current subscribers from Sept. 15 to 17 and for the general public starting Sept. 18.  WTOL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The EPA is cleaning up the Nebraska Avenue chemical storage site that Toledo firefighters shut down in 2024 and must remove over 2,300 containers—some with cyanide, sulfide, arsenic, cadmium, and chromium—to secure the area. The cleanup will continue until 2026 as the site remains a superfund removal area.  WTVG

FINANCE NEWS

  • Tax credits for electric vehicles will end on Sept 30. A separate credit for energy-efficient home upgrades will expire on Dec 31—residents should check the rules to claim them.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Toledo Lucas County Public Library will host voter registration events on Sept. 16 at several branches to help visitors confirm their registrations, locate polling places, and learn about ballot issues in partnership with local groups — League of Women Voters, NAACP Youth Council and the Toledo Chapter of the Links, Inc. Each branch will operate on a different schedule from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.  WTOL
  • The League of Women Voters of Ohio will bring its 'Your Voice, Your Vote, Your Power' Airstream tour to University of Toledo on Sept 16 so students can register to vote and pick up election information outside the Savage and Associates Business Complex at 2905 W Bancroft Street from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.—the tour, now in its second year, visits colleges across the state ahead of Ohio’s general election registration deadline on Oct 6.  WTOL
  • Toledo officials said sewer overflows have stopped after the collapse of the Arlington Avenue interceptor in June and a bypass pump replacement began on Sept. 5 (Kokosing is now handling the repairs), but health advisories remain for Delaware and Swan creeks and Heilman Ditch as water testing continues.  Spectrum News 1

  • Fall has arrived and orchards and pumpkin patches in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan are offering apple picking and pumpkin harvest events; several farms such as Hoen's Orchard started apple picking on Sept. 1 while BJ Pumpkin Farm will open on Sept. 19—readers can enjoy these seasonal spots for fresh produce and fall fun.
