CRIME NEWS

  • A Toledo man, Haydon Mitchell, was charged with 13 felonies after he broke into multiple Take 5 Oil Change locations on Douglas Road and Secor between Aug. 8 and Aug. 12, stealing money including $1,000 from one safe and $500 from another—surveillance video identified him.  WTVG
  • Istam Naimov, 24, was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide after his tractor-trailer caused a series of fatal crashes on the Ohio Turnpike last August—he struck multiple vehicles that killed several people and was later detained by ICE in Geauga County and deported.  WTOL
  • Lisa Titkemeier, a Toledo woman already convicted of faking cancer to misdirect donations, now faces a theft charge for allegedly withholding funds raised for the families of fallen police officers from lemonade and hot cocoa stands and will appear in court today at 11 a.m.—she may face up to one year in jail if convicted.  WTOL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • New gas stations in Toledo are sparking fierce price wars as competitors lower prices gradually to undercut each other + then reset prices when profits shrink. Petroleum expert Patrick De Haan said drivers will likely see gas prices drop below $3 when summer ends and cooler weather reduces demand.  WTVG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, researchers from the University of Toledo launched a project to test if extreme weather changes in soil can increase the spread of harmful algal toxins near Lake Erie—led by Dr. Kennedy Doro and Dr. David Kennedy and supported by a $300,000 NSF grant, the study will monitor air, water and soil conditions to guide future safety measures.  The University of Toledo

  • Robert bought a $1 million Cashword scratch-off from S and G #35 at 4810 Suder Avenue in Toledo and won the top prize— the Ohio Lottery announced his win on August 20th.  WTOL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Toledoans gathered at a city council meeting today to debate a proposed ban on kratom, an herbal supplement that some say may cause harm while others believe it is safe in its natural form—synthetic extracts have raised safety concerns. Local businesses have already removed kratom products from their shelves as officials continue to consider new rules.  WTVG
  • A section of Holland-Sylvania Road between Airport Highway and Angola Road will be closed for six days starting today as crews repair the railroad crossing. Drivers must use a detour via Airport Highway — Reynolds Road — Angola Road for alternate travel.  WTVG
  • Owner Sean Love of Agenda Sports Bar and Grill spoke at Toledo City Council today asking for fair treatment after a judge ruled the bar a nuisance and ordered it closed for one year in just 30 days without warning—council members and Black bar owners joined him, saying the swift shutdown raises questions over fair enforcement.  WTVG
