COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way will host the “Nourished the Flourish” volunteer event where community volunteers pack snack packs for local kids—Islamic Food Bank executive director Lauren Grounds said the event will help provide healthy snacks for children. More details on the event's schedule and location are expected to be shared soon.  WTOL

CRIME NEWS

  • A man was injured in a shooting on Wychwood in Toledo yesterday—police launched an investigation to determine the incident details.  WTVG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Nature’s Nursery is asking for help placing rehabilitated orphaned skunks—there has been a surge of these wild animals needing care this year, and volunteers are needed to support the effort.  WTVG
  • Nature’s Nursery has seen a 57% rise in orphaned baby skunks needing care and works to vaccinate and release them safely in their home counties. The group asks people with wooded or prairie land (Putnam, Wyandot, Hardin, Henry, and Williams counties) to support its effort by providing a release site for the animals.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Toledo school and county officials warned that Ohio's proposed property tax changes may cut critical funding for schools and public services as lawmakers work to override vetoed provisions. Local leaders say eliminating local control over tax levies could force steep budget cuts and higher borrowing costs—risking essential community services.  Toledo Free Press
  • Republic Services is testing an app to let Toledo residents track trucks & report problems as its contract with the city nears expiration, and city officials plan to adjust the service when a new contract is awarded.  WTVG
  • Toledo city council members Sam Melden, Vanice Williams, and John Hobbs III introduced legislation this week to ban kratom amid growing safety concerns linked to addiction, liver damage, and overdose deaths. They will ask the Ohio Board of Pharmacy to reclassify kratom as a Schedule I drug and discuss the proposals at a Public Safety Committee meeting on Aug. 20—officials say the measure is needed—while residents watch the process unfold.  WTOL
  • Local officials said that trash and recycling collection was delayed by one day in Toledo, Maumee, Monclova Township, Sylvania and Oregon—areas in northwest Ohio—after workers at an Erie facility did not cross a picket line Tuesday during a Teamsters strike. Authorities advised residents to leave bins outside so extra crews could catch up with service.  WTOL
