COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Organizers Bruce Baumhower and retired Jeep plant manager Jerry Huber started Toledo Jeep Fest after finding a 1960s magazine and working with local historian Diana Spaulding and a committee that first drew about 30,000 people. The fest (Aug. 1-3) will draw 70-80,000 visitors as it builds on Toledo's long connection with the iconic Jeep brand.  WTVG

  • A fire broke out on downtown Lucas St. yesterday and emergency crews arrived to control it — officials have not yet reported injuries or damage.  WTVG

  • Krazy Bins is an outlet store that sells returned items for low prices and is expanding to Toledo. Its grand opening will be on Friday, August 1 at 10 a.m. at 3314 Secor Rd — a new spot for bargain shopping.  Toledo Free Press
  • Allegiant Air will launch seasonal nonstop flights from Toledo to Sarasota on Nov. 20 — fares start at $59 — providing a direct link to Florida’s Gulf Coast for leisure travelers.  WTOL

CRIME NEWS

  • Police in Oregon warned customers about a fraud scheme linked to a fast food restaurant while experts reported scams increased among young adults and seniors this summer + Ohio officials urged Toledo residents to take precautions to avoid financial loss.  WTVG
  • Authorities said a woman was arrested on Jul. 29 after she hit a man with her vehicle (then crashed into a home), and investigators began reviewing the incident.  WTVG
  • A man was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle at Weiler Homes in East Toledo early Tuesday morning—police say a woman was arrested after her car crashed into a building and caused a water leak.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost filed a lawsuit in Franklin County Common Pleas Court against Pawsible Angels Inc. (a Findlay nonprofit) and its former executive director, Michele S. Frank, alleging that donations were diverted to cover personal expenses like rent, utilities and medical bills while seeking restitution, civil penalties up to $10,000 per violation and an injunction barring her from serving on charity boards.  WTVG
  • The Lucas County Foster Grandparent Program is ending by the end of August because federal funding cuts have forced the closure of the 50-year-old service that connected 54 senior volunteers with nearly 1,000 children. Local volunteers worry about the loss of support that helped both kids and seniors, and they face a challenging future without this key program.  WTVG
