COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cherry Street Mission’s women’s shelter, The Sparrow’s Nest—nearly 100 years old and in need of repair—received a $70,000 Lowe’s Hometowns grant and will start renovations in August to offer a cleaner, safer space for over 600 women each year.  WTVG
  • Chelsea, a Toledo woman and founder of Whisker Watch Ohio, started a trap—neuter—return program at Raintree Village to control over 100 stray cats but was told by mobile home management to stop feeding and sheltering them. She said the cat population could get worse without her work and added that new management may be behind the decision.  WTVG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Applications are open for the Tech419 Pitch Competition hosted by The University of Toledo Business Incubator, which will select five finalists to refine their five-minute pitches and gain coaching before a final showcase on Nov. 6; entries must be submitted by Sunday, Aug. 3 at 11:59 p.m. The contest is open to early-stage tech companies (pre-revenue or early-revenue) based in Northwest Ohio seeking help with commercialization.  The University of Toledo

CRIME NEWS

  • Toledo officials are seeking to shut down Agenda Sports Bar as a nuisance property after four people were shot during the Independence Day weekend—two fatally—with a court hearing extending the case until August 4 while the bar remains closed.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Area Office on Aging's CEO said rising utility costs are straining older adults with fixed incomes. The office will soon offer utility payment assistance to eligible individuals (details on eligibility and timing are pending).  WTOL

SPORTS NEWS

  • Toledo youth travel team Dirty Birdz won the NFL flag football championship on Sunday with a one-point victory at the Pro Football Hall of Fame after trailing 14 to 0. Head coach Jeremy Jackson said the team’s strong finish brought pride to Toledo—boosting local interest in flag football.  WTOL
  • Family and friends hosted the 4th annual Jackson Weis Golf Outing at Valleywood Golf Club in Swanton to honor the 9-year-old Sylvania boy who died in a July 2020 car crash, raising over $75,000 for local youth sports programs. The event benefited the Toledo Ice Crew Hockey Program—reflecting his love for hockey—and featured a tribute on hole 1 with a penalty box in his honor.  WTOL
