  • Megan Stockmaster invites Toledo residents to join the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure held downtown to raise funds and support breast cancer research.  WTOL
  • The Salvation Army will distribute 800 backpacks and offer free haircuts to Lucas County kids to help them start school prepared and confident—this effort supports students getting ready for the new term.  WTOL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Steven Wipfli, known for his 'Love Your Neighbor' yard signs, will show his paper collage work at the 32nd annual Art on the Mall on Sunday, July 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Centennial Mall, where over 100 artists will exhibit pieces available for purchase (cash or credit).  The University of Toledo
  • Tonight, the National Museum of the Great Lakes invites visitors to see its new exhibit of historical models on the Maumee waterfront, where interactive displays show the region's rich maritime history—stories that appeal to both young and old—drawing guests to learn about local heritage. More than 60% of visitors come from outside Lucas County, which marks the museum's growing role in sharing this legacy.  WTVG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Toledo dropped by 15 cents per gallon this week, with an average of $2.82 and a range from $2.36 to $3.19. The fall follows a drop in oil prices (prices are 30.7 cents lower than last month and 66.5 cents lower than a year ago while the national average is $3.09).  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Toledo Rocketry Club won the NASA Artemis Student Challenge Innovation Award for its E.P.I.C. Payload Capsule — a design that sends eight data points — in late April and early May competitions. The award flag flown aboard Artemis 1 is now on display in their North Engineering Building workspace.  The University of Toledo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Toledo Firefighters Local 92 voted Monday to accept a neutral third-party report that ended a 476-day contract stalemate — with members voting 356 yes and 15 no. Toledo City Council had approved the contract plan earlier in July to establish 50 years of base wage parity with police.  WTVG
  • Toledo City Council’s Public Safety Committee will hold a public discussion at 4 p.m. on July 29 about a plan to lease a new police substation on Cherry Street from Mercy Health St. V’s—if approved, the department will close the D. Michael Collins Northwest district station on Sylvania Avenue. The lease is for a 1-year term with options to renew, with Mercy covering the rent and the city paying utilities and operating costs.  WTVG
  • Lucas County Commissioners voted on July 15 not to fund a new corrections center—citing the risk of a 35-year debt and a total cost of about $549.5 million—while agreeing to improve the current jail on a tight budget.  Toledo Free Press
