COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Toledo is hosting an urban beautification event in the Willys neighborhood on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.—residents may set out bulky items, small appliances, televisions, computers, green waste and mattresses for pick-up, and crews will return on Sunday for any missed items.  WTOL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lucas County Commissioners will hold a public discussion today at 11 a.m. about the future of the new Corrections Center project that has been on pause since the November 2023 groundbreaking. County leaders hope lower borrowing rates will allow them to move forward with a project that may cost over $300 million.  WTVG
  • Toledo's Department of Public Utilities will begin placing red tags on the doors of customers with overdue water bills next Monday, July 21, to collect nearly $66 million in unpaid fees that have built up since 2020. Customers who pay their bills or enroll in a payment plan can have service restored within 24 to 48 hours — officials note commercial accounts will be handled first before residential disconnections proceed over the following weeks — so residents are urged to act quickly.  WTOL

  • Rossford will host the 2025 Balloon and Fireworks Fest this weekend at TOCA Sports at 10020 S. Compass Drive, where free admission will allow visitors to enjoy hot air balloons, fireworks, food trucks and live music. Parking is available at the Crossroads Shopping Centre—with shuttle service provided by Rossford Schools for easy access.  WTVG

  • Archbold High School grad and former Bowling Green two-way player DJ Newman was selected by the Houston Astros in the 15th round of the MLB Draft on Monday—he is the third northwest Ohio athlete chosen, joining peers from Otsego and Woodmore.  WTOL
  • Northwest Ohio pitchers Joseph Dzierwa and Hunter Allen were drafted by the Baltimore Orioles this week, with Dzierwa from Otsego selected in the second round and Allen from Woodmore in the seventh round. Both showed impressive pitching skills in high school and college—setting the stage for their promising professional careers.  WTOL
  • Otsego High School graduate Joseph Dzierwa was selected by the Baltimore Orioles with the 58th overall pick on July 14th—and the 6-foot-8 left-handed pitcher, who spent three seasons at Michigan State earning Big Ten Pitcher of the Year honors as a junior, impressed scouts with his performance.  WTOL
