Good morning, Toledo. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 10th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Paws and People Pantry, started by dog groomer Brooke Winkelman and run by volunteers, is facing a $1,000 monthly funding gap that has left its shelves sparse as it continues to serve about 100 people each month. Winkelman said regular donations and volunteer support keep the pantry open every two weeks to help clients feed both themselves and their pets + sustain the growing need in Lucas County.  WTVG
  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo warn that stalled federal funding puts long-term sustainability at risk—even though they have a short-term financial plan in place.  WTOL

CRIME NEWS

  • Toledo council members demanded more transparency from the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement after a violent holiday weekend that left seven people dead from stabbings and shootings — several arrests were made and investigations continue.  WTVG
  • A 17-year-old Toledo teen was fatally shot during an alleged gun sale on Independence Day near Baden, and his mother says the three teens arrested (two 14-year-olds and a 17-year-old) should be tried as adults as court proceedings continue.  WTVG
  • Toledo officials reported that 17-year-old Jaycion Bennett was fatally shot on the Fourth of July in south Toledo during an alleged gun deal gone wrong—three teenagers were arrested on murder charges.  WTOL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Toledo are frustrated by the ongoing sewer collapse—city officials announced a repair timeline and are working on required corrections after an Ohio EPA violation notice was issued last month.  WTOL
  • Contractors will soon dig along Arlington Ave. to install a permanent pump after completing sewer work that fixed a collapse caused by a sinkhole in September. Officials say the new pump will better manage rain flow because clogged temporary pumps let sewage into waterways—health officials have kept the e. coli advisory on Swan and Delaware Creeks in place until repairs finish.  WTVG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local high school students will hold a universal healthcare clinic on July 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to offer free screenings by 11 types of doctors—everyone is welcome regardless of insurance status.  WTVG
  • The City of Toledo now enforces its lead ordinance on buildings older than 1978 and will impose fines and misdemeanor charges on owners who do not register their properties by the end of the year. Nurse Gloria Smith led a mobile clinic event last month to test children for lead poisoning — a threat mainly linked to old housing stock.  Toledo Free Press
  • University of Toledo neuroscientist Dr. James Burkett received a $2.94 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study if low levels of a common insecticide are linked to autism, and he will test reducing doses on pregnant prairie voles to find a safe level (his study may also show if early sleep treatment can lessen later symptoms).  The University of Toledo
