ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Ryan Martin, a Toledo resident from Westland Gardens, was evacuated during a chemical accident early in June and died on June 13 from burns and organ failure after returning home — his family held a tribute to honor his life.  WTVG

CRIME NEWS

  • Two men are accused of stealing a nearly $7,000 sculpture created by a Toledo School for the Arts student during a yearlong project — police are investigating the theft as scrap metal crime.  WTVG

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Toledo celebrates Juneteenth with free events featuring live music, interactive art, food trucks and fitness activities at the Toledo Museum of Art Campus and Glass City Pavilion starting at 11 a.m. — additional celebrations include a run and recital on June 20 and a brunch with a silent auction on June 21.  Toledo Free Press

  • Dr. James Holloway will become UToledo president on July 15 and shared wisdom from his dad inspired by Will Rogers in honor of Father's Day.  The University of Toledo

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Toledo water tests show that Delaware Creek now has about 9 times the safe E. coli level while Swan Creek has 1.5 to 2 times the safe level, marking significant improvement from tests done nearly two weeks ago — city officials said the health advisory stays in effect until more tests confirm the water is safe and heavy rain does not cause further sewer overflows.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio outreach agencies will soon use $198 million from an opioid settlement for treatment, prevention and education. One Ohio Recovery Foundation is expected to receive much of the money—local groups like Brigid's Path hope the funds will help care for babies exposed to addictive substances.  Spectrum News 1
  • Ohio lawmakers are negotiating three budget versions that deal with funding for public schools and the new Browns stadium — they plan to reach an agreement by June 25 before the governor signs the budget by July 1.  Spectrum News 1
  • Toledo and state lawmakers have raised alarm over increasing political violence after an alleged gunman shot Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses—concerns grew when it was revealed that Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur was reportedly targeted. Senator Paula Hicks-Hudson and Representative Erika White stressed that officials must condemn violent rhetoric and will work to boost security measures, including increased OSHP support.  WTVG
  • Yesterday, the Army Corps held a virtual hearing for Toledo residents to share their views on a plan to replace the aging Line 5 pipeline with a new tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac — supporters say the tunnel will protect energy jobs at Toledo Refining while opponents warn of risks to the Great Lakes. The Corps will decide on the permit this fall and hold another public hearing on June 25 from 5-8 p.m.  WTVG
