COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Toledo man said that several street lights in his neighborhood have been out for months—he worries this issue may endanger pedestrians and drivers.  WTVG
  • Kevin Collins, a resident at The Commons at Garden Lake, said dark street lights near Garden Lake Parkway + Billie Johnson Way make it risky for veterans using wheelchairs. Toledo Edison will begin repair work this weekend on the underground line powering the lights + plans to enhance safety.  WTVG
  • Top Roofing donated a free Owens Corning roof and labor for the St. Jude Dream Home in Perrysburg+ the work supports the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The company is sponsoring a $10,000 gift card giveaway during open house weekends starting in July+ reserved ticket holders can win extra prizes like a Honda Civic LX.  WTOL

BUSINESS NEWS

  • First Quality Tissue plans to open a 1.6-million-square-foot production facility in Defiance County in 2025 with a $985 million investment that will create 407 jobs over an eight-year ramp-up—local officials have secured incentives and improved infrastructure to support further regional growth. Construction is set to begin this year as the project draws developers eager to build homes and other businesses nearby.  Toledo Free Press

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities released body camera footage of a Henry County home where 80 dogs were seized from dangerous, unsanitary conditions—six puppies were found dead and 65-year-old dog breeder Marty Eis was charged with five counts of cruelty to companion animals following years of community complaints, with the dogs now placed with rescues.  WTVG
  • Diontae Davis, 31, was indicted by a Lucas County grand jury for aggravated murder after he allegedly fatally shot 32-year-old Jovontai Highsmith near Lagrange and Peck streets in north Toledo in April and was arrested on June 3 after fleeing a traffic stop + his indictment includes charges for murder, assault, firearm discharge, evidence tampering, failing to obey police, cocaine trafficking, and cocaine possession.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Host Jaden Jefferson talked with David Young about Toledo Excel, a 37-year program that helps local students from 8th grade through college with school work, leadership building, and community service. Young said the program changed during the pandemic and will offer more world travel and local mentoring to shape Toledo’s future.  Toledo Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz asked Senators Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted to protect a $28.5 million grant for East Toledo infrastructure improvements—he noted that $2 million has already been spent and warned that cuts in the Big Beautiful Bill could harm the project.  WTVG

SPORTS NEWS

  • The OHSAA said that in the 2025 football season each region will have 12 teams and the top four seeds will get a first-round bye & home-field advantage through the first three rounds. Officials explained the change came after schools asked for a smaller playoff field and the divisional breakdowns remain the same.  WTOL
  • Liberty Center High School’s Hunter Spangler won the state shot put championship on June 6 in Columbus (with a throw measuring 63 feet 1.25 inches), earning his first individual title for the school since 2014. He credited his coach, father, and teammates (his key supporters) for his success and said his achievement sets a clear goal for next year.  WTOL
