CRIME NEWS

  • Since 2020, 89 unsolved homicides have left Toledo families seeking answers—authorities continue to investigate the cold cases.  WTOL
  • Toledo police arrested Dionte Davis, 31, on Tuesday for allegedly murdering 32-year-old Jovontai Highsmith, who was fatally shot in a crashed vehicle near Lagrange + Peck streets on April 8 after an officer pursued Davis when he failed to stop during a routine traffic stop.  WTOL
  • Matthew Exton, a 42-year-old Toledo man accused of trying to shoot a patron at Sabira restaurant in downtown Toledo in April and facing charges of attempted murder and felonious assault, is scheduled for a competency hearing at 9 a.m. today—he has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and remains held on a $1.3 million bond.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carlson Library is undergoing summer renovations that are updating the first floor plus changes in the basement and second floor while floors 3 through 5 remain quiet study areas. The library is open with normal summer hours and visitors still have access to key services, although the Information Commons computers are temporarily unavailable.  The University of Toledo
  • High school students from Toledo Technology Academy and other local schools are joining UToledo and NearSpace Education in the Dream Big project to build low-cost satellites for studying urban heat islands and harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie—recent tests used weather balloons at Defiance Elementary in early May.  The University of Toledo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced that 34 local drug task forces received over $2.2 million from the RecoveryOhio Law Enforcement Fund to help officers disrupt drug trafficking and support substance use prevention and recovery. The grant—secured with the General Assembly—will fund efforts to dismantle large drug trafficking organizations and prevent drug and money flows from international cartels.  Toledo Legal News
