- ➤ A Toledo Police officer, Jeremy Berndt, took an Alford plea yesterday for attempted dereliction of duty after buying marijuana on duty—he may face up to 60 days in jail with sentencing set for June 25 as an internal affairs review continues. WTVG
- ➤ Toledo police arrested Dionte Davis (31) on Tuesday after he fled a traffic stop in connection with the fatal shooting of Jovontai Highsmith (32); officers said Highsmith was found inside a white car that crashed into a truck near Lagrange on April 7. WTVG
- ➤ Charles Walker—convicted of the 2022 murders of two teens—is set to have his attorney argue for a new trial today at the 6th District Court of Appeals as he claims unseen evidence could clear him and if his appeal fails he will spend the rest of his life in prison. WTOL
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The City of Toledo invites local residents to join The Juneteenth Experience—a weeklong celebration of Black excellence and freedom running from June 13 to June 21. The event will start with a Pan-African flag raising at 10 a.m. on Jackson Street near One Government Center and will offer parades, cultural fairs and live music performances at multiple locations across the city.
