COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Toledo welcomes several events this month: the Toledo Guitar Show (Sunday, June 7) at Stranahan Theater Hall, the 53rd Old West End Festival (June 6–7) featuring the King Wamba Carnival Parade, and the Toledo Pride Bar Crawl (Saturday, June 20) at Whiskey Red Saloon.  Toledo City Paper
  • Metroparks Toledo has named Billy Mann (an executive with the Boys & Girls) as its new chief philanthropy officer. He will lead efforts to boost community support and enhance local giving across the parks.  The Blade
  • Leadership Toledo has named Arika Michaelis its new executive director after she completed the Signature Program (a milestone in her career) and will lead efforts to boost community outreach and strengthen local partnerships.  The Blade

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Boxmasters mix British Invasion rock styles for a live show on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at the Valentine Theatre (ticket prices range from $58 to $103).  Toledo City Paper

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Toledo dropped 6% to an average of $4.39 per gallon over the past week, with the cheapest station charging $3.99. National prices also fell nearly 20 cents per gallon as easing tensions + market changes lowered fuel costs, though analysts warn prices may climb if uncertainties return.  WTOL
  • OPmobility is building a new auto manufacturing plant in Rossford expected to open in the second half of 2027 to create 500 jobs and boost the local automotive sector (officials say this will benefit regional businesses).  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Maritime Academy Board Chairman Paul Hubbard encouraged 24 high school graduates as they marked their milestone ceremony at the school. The speech highlighted hard work and resilience — urging the new voters to make their voices heard and embrace upcoming opportunities.  Toledo Free Press
  • Hiawatha Elementary will close as part of Washington Local’s plan to reshape schools due to low enrollment following the new middle school opening — the district will announce transitional steps for affected students and staff soon.  WTOL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • University of Toledo researchers have developed floating buoys that slowly release chemicals into Lake Erie to prevent harmful algal blooms. They will soon begin testing the buoys in the lake, which could help protect water quality along the shore.  The Blade

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Bradner Fire Department broke ground on its new station (a project decades in planning) in a ceremony that marks a major step forward for local emergency services.  WTVG
  • ODOT will close I-280 in Toledo starting at 7 p.m. Monday for survey inspection work; the Veterans Glass City Skyway Bridge and other ramps will be shut with all traffic forced off before 11 p.m., and the road will reopen at 6 a.m. Tuesday.  WTOL
  • Bradner Fire Department broke ground on a new station in Bradner + decades of planning led to a project aimed at enhancing local emergency services for residents.  WTVG

  • Multiple health events energize Toledo: Global Running Day 5K at Swan Creek Preserve on June 3, Yoga with Butterflies in Whitehouse on June 11, Tai Chi at the National Museum of the Great Lakes on June 13, and a Let’s Get Moving walk (free) at Walbridge Park on June 27.  Toledo City Paper
