COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, community members gather at Finale on the Farm for the H.O.O.V.E.S. open house (supporting veterans with PTSD) that features food, music and horses.  WTOL
  • World War II veteran Donald Gorrell celebrated his 102nd birthday on Friday with family gathering Saturday at Sidelines Grill off Holland-Sylvania Road; born in Pioneer, he credited common sense and a healthy diet for his long life and said he will no longer eat brussel sprouts or asparagus.  WTOL
  • BG Pickleballin is set to host a charity pickleball tournament in Toledo (venue pending) to support local causes. Officials say event details will be shared soon.  WTVG

CULTURE NEWS

  • Really Cool Comic Con will take over Glass City Center — the event offers local fans a chance to explore comic panels and vendor booths. Organizers said the convention will bring a fresh pop culture experience soon.  WTVG
  • Sylvania Community Orchestra performed a free concert Sunday in Sylvania to honor America’s 250th anniversary by featuring music from Gershwin, Copland, and Armstrong.  WTOL
  • The 53rd Old West End Festival runs from Friday, June 5 to Sunday, June 7 and features live music at the Agnes Reynolds Jackson Arboretum, a bike ride meetup, the King Wamba Parade ending at the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA), a 5K race starting Saturday and house tours in neighborhoods.  Toledo Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Children and Youth (DCY) and the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (DEW) announced the Kindergarten Readiness Boot Camp to help children entering kindergarten reach a 60 percent readiness goal, with 71 school districts planning at least 75 hours of instruction from today to Aug. 28.  Toledo Legal News
  • The Josh Project (a local nonprofit) hosted kayaking lessons at Maumee Bay State Park on May 31 to teach kids water safety and reduce drowning risks. More sessions are expected in the coming weeks.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bradner Fire Department broke ground on a new 6,800 sqft station on Main Street after decades of planning, with crews set to finish construction by March to offer better space and improved features. The new facility replaces the 4,000 sqft station on Crocker Street (used since 1955) and will better meet current needs.  WTVG
