COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Metroparks Toledo has named local Boys & Girls Club veteran Billy Mann as its new chief philanthropy officer. The change comes after the Glass City Riverwalk project stage is finished and sets the stage for future planning.  WTOL
  • Toledo Metroparks reminds trail users of updated rules for safe passing and proper spacing across its 200 miles of trails. Chief of Rangers Brad Navarre (who leads safety efforts) outlined guidelines for cyclists, e-bikes, and dog owners, stressing the left-passing rule and 6-foot leash requirement.  WTVG

CULTURE NEWS

  • A historic project is mapping Revolutionary War graves in Elmore and Ottawa County to honor soldiers who fought for independence. The findings will be released on July 4 as more than 500 local volunteers helped document over 4,000 graves across many cemeteries.  WTVG

  • Local businesses are signaling summer hiring concerns as they brace for increased seasonal competition + they plan to boost recruitment efforts and encourage job seekers to apply for upcoming opportunities.  WTVG
  • Today, a new report shows that teens in Toledo are worried about finding summer jobs and future opportunities. The study highlights growing concerns among young job seekers.  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Greenwood Elementary, longtime teaching partners Alysia Cloum and Sheri Lindsey will retire at the end of the school year after 35 years together in the second grade program (renowned for building strong bonds in the classroom). Their departure marks the close of an era in local education.  WTVG
  • The Toledo Lucas County Public Library’s Summer Read Challenge will start on June 1 and offer prizes for kids and adults, inviting residents to engage in a fun reading incentive. The program encourages learning and community connection throughout the summer.  WTOL
  • The University of Toledo Ritter Planetarium launches a summer schedule at 8:30 p.m. in June, July and August: Oasis in Space, Stars of the Pharaohs and Firefall.   • UToledo scientists have developed a new statistical method to count both visible and hidden species, published in the May issue of Ecological Informatics. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • AT&T restored service after a power issue during overnight equipment installation disrupted 911 dispatch, the company said. Operators confirmed that systems are fully functioning today.  WTVG
  • Josh Hartbarger ended his 25-year career in Whitehouse, beginning as a volunteer firefighter and finishing as deputy administrator, and will start as administrator for Maumee. The village council honored his service during a May 19 meeting.  Toledo Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rep. Kaptur announced today that $7.7M in federal support was allocated to boost cancer research at UToledo and expand local health center and Head Start programs across NW Ohio’s 9th District. The funding comes from the US Department of Health & Human Services to improve medical research and community care.  WTVG

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A $29M affordable senior housing complex is set to open soon in the Junction neighborhood to support local seniors (affordable housing needs are rising), according to the Area Office on Aging.  WTOL
  • A tenant at Greenwood Park Mobile Homes reported that a sewage backup has persisted since March (the landlord has yet to address the issue), leaving residents concerned about proper maintenance.  WTVG
