  • Sally’s Market at the Salvation Army in Toledo has seen a sharp rise in families needing food as local pantries struggle to keep shelves stocked. The market now serves 50 to 60 families a day — and with cuts in food bank donations, the Salvation Army must spend more on bulk food purchases — to meet growing community need.  WTVG
  • Paul Jeris, known locally as Put-in-Bay Paul, will launch into space on flight NS-32 from Launch Site One in West Texas at 8:30 a.m. CDT on May 31—he plans to honor his late father, a longtime NASA engineer, by checking off a top bucket list item.  WTVG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ye Olde Durty Bird reopened 17 days after a fire on May 10 forced it to close for repairs to its kitchen wall and ceiling. The downtown Toledo restaurant now operates seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.—the staff said they are excited to serve the community again.  WTVG

CRIME NEWS

  • Richard Scheich, a Toledo investment firm executive, pleaded guilty on May 27 to two counts of conspiracy and three counts of selling unregistered securities in a decade-long Ponzi scheme that defrauded nearly $9 million from investors—he will cooperate with investigations into his co-defendants.  WTVG
  • A 24 year old Venezuelan man named Anthony Labrador Sierra faced federal court on May 27 for allegedly posing as a teen at Perrysburg High School by using a fake birth certificate and lying on federal documents to buy a gun — he is charged with illegal firearm possession, making false statements during a purchase and providing a false document, and he remains in custody at Lucas County jail.  WTVG

  • Thousands of fans filled the Glass Bowl on May 27 for the Hometown Heroes Glass City Live concert — the first major event at the venue since July 1 — and headliner Zac Brown Band performed with special guests Dustin Lynch, Luke Grimes and Gaelic Storm.  The University of Toledo
  • Officials unveiled the first of 23 murals along the banks of the Maumee River on May 27 to add color and local art to the riverfront. More murals will be installed in the coming weeks — the project will bring a creative boost to the area.  WTVG
