  • Residents in Toledo can join a Metroparks Meetup to go birding near the mouth of the Maumee, where the lakeshore is expected to host high bird counts for enthusiasts today.  WTVG

  • Spirit Airlines abruptly ceased operations earlier this month, leaving passengers stranded in Toledo + many travelers had to alter their flight plans.  WTVG

CULTURE NEWS

  • The first mural along the Veterans' Glass City Skyway pillars was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting Wednesday, and artist Dean Davis plans to add 5-6 more before year's end.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Emergency medicine students take part in an annual field training day that offers a hands-on look at tactical first response skills before patients reach the hospital (including paramedic techniques). The event provides practical experience to better prepare them for real-life challenges.  WTOL
  • At the May 11 board meeting, Anthony Wayne food service director Megan Menchaca explained that new USDA guidelines to lower sodium (below 1g) and sugar (10% of calories) will require recipe adjustments and additional staff training for school meals starting in 2027 to 2028.  Toledo Free Press
  • Jefferson Junior High students brought history to life today as eighth graders Kenley Kipplen (13) and Emma Iszkowski (14) took part in a playful skit using Nerf guns and laughter. The classroom event mixed fun with hands-on learning.  The Blade

  • University of Toledo researchers have developed algae-busting buoy systems that could prevent harmful algal blooms by improving local water quality (a scalable solution now under study). The innovation may offer a practical tool for protecting Toledo’s waterways.  WTOL

  • Toledo Public Schools will sell the Thurgood Marshall building for $1 as the Area Office on Aging plans to convert it into senior housing to serve local older adults.  WTOL
