COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Skyleigh Cook and Sarah Otis run Love and Luggage at a local church to pack essential items such as soap—supplies needed by young adults aging out of foster care. The program has helped 75 individuals so far and now asks for community donations to keep its support going.  WTVG

CRIME NEWS

  • A 19-year-old driver from Toledo rear-ended a 61-year-old woman’s Jeep on Summerfield Road in Summerfield Township Saturday at around 4 p.m., forcing the vehicle to roll over in a ditch and killing her (investigators ruled out alcohol) while the driver was seriously hurt and later released from the hospital.  WTVG
  • On May 16, police said groups exchanged gunfire on the 4200 block of Walker Avenue which injured an adult man taken to the hospital—37-year-old Jessica Garcia was arrested and charged with felonious assault.  WTVG
  • A 24-year-old man from Oregon, Ohio was arrested on two counts of second-degree homicide after his speeding and alcohol-impaired driving on U.S. 23 caused a crash that killed Kaitlyn Ellison, a seven-month pregnant Michigan woman—whose crash also resulted in the death of her unborn child—officials said.  WTVG

CULTURE NEWS

  • Toledo radio icon Bob Kelly died on May 15 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease—he was a beloved voice for more than 50 years and was inducted into the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame. A visitation and celebration of life is scheduled for May 31 from 2—6 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home on King Road in Toledo with a memorial service following at 6 p.m.  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Anthony Wayne High School, four seniors signed commitments to serve our country by placing their hands on their hearts in front of the flag during the first military signing ceremony. They joined the Air National Guard, and organizers designed the event to honor students with military legacies—reminding the community of local service and commitment.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A constitutional amendment to end property taxes may go on the November ballot after the Attorney General approved the measure and soon signature drives will begin. Supporters say new taxes + like income and sales taxes will help pay for schools, police, and fire services.  WTVG

SPORTS NEWS

  • Garmin will host its first marathon series in Toledo on Sept. 21 with a full marathon, half-marathon, 10K and 5K run on a USATF-certified course that goes by key spots like the Toledo Zoo and Toledo Museum of Art. Run Toledo will manage the event and a free two-day expo will lead to a finish line festival.  Toledo Free Press
