CULTURE NEWS

  • Toledo Alliance for the Performing Arts has renovated the old Masonic Temple on Heatherdowns into the new Center for Live Arts to bring together local music, dance, and jazz groups. This Memorial Day weekend, TAPA will host a cookout on Saturday, May 24 with Beethoven’s 16 string quartets starting at 9 a.m.—tickets are available for individual shows or a full day pass.  Toledo City Paper

  • Junior Achievement of Northwest Ohio’s 5th Year program celebrated its inaugural class on May 7th at the Glass City Center and welcomed 30 new students who will join a nine-month transition experience designed to help recent graduates decide their next steps.  Toledo Free Press
  • Today at Sherman Elementary, the Toledo Buffalo Soldiers partnered with the Lucas County Prosecutor's Office—teaching students about gun safety.  WTOL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bowling Green State University biology professor Kevin McCluney led a three-year study tracking bees in urban gardens in 10 cities — including Toledo — that found many bees are more at risk of dehydration than overheating as temperatures rise. Researchers said the data will guide future efforts to protect pollinators and food production.  Toledo Legal News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio State Rep. Michele Grim introduced the Ohio Medical Debt Fairness Act that will ban hospitals from reporting medical debt to credit bureaus, stop wage garnishment for unpaid bills, and cap interest at 3% (she co-sponsored the bill with Rep. Jean Schmidt). Grim previously cleared local medical debt on Toledo city council, eliminating debt for 112,000 Lucas County residents (which erased $230 million in obligations) before serving her second term in the Ohio House.  Toledo Free Press
