COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Strain’s Farm Market on Hill Avenue is helping seniors sign up for a benefits program that offers $50 in free produce, though fewer cards are available this year. Residents must apply by May 22nd (cards available from May 15) and bring ID if they are 60 or older.  WTVG

  • Residents in the Onsted apartment complex face plumbing problems after a water main break left them without showers; they say the landlord has not contacted them for 17 days and provided no timeline for repairs.  WTOL
  • Community leaders met to discuss Toledo’s growing homelessness, noting a 107% rise in unsheltered residents while shelter beds dropped by 4% between 2025 and 2026 (data from local agencies). They encouraged neighbors to volunteer, donate, or prepare meals for those in need.  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Toledo Zoo announced that Johari (Jo), a 38-year-old western lowland gorilla diagnosed with advanced cardiac disease, died May 6. The zoo said medication and daily ultrasounds no longer sustained her comfort, and staff will monitor her troop during this transition.  WTVG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents can use the new Clean Toledo Recycling Center starting June 2 at 3900 Creekside Ave for year-round self-service recycling and waste disposal (proof of residency required) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through Saturdays.  WTVG
  • City officials advanced plans to rename a street in honor of 13-year-old Kei'mani Latigue after her notable community impact on May 7, and the proposal is expected to be implemented soon.  WTVG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Toledo’s Neurosciences Center ALS Clinic opened in March 2025 and offers one morning and one afternoon session each month where patients can see a full care team in one visit. Providers plan to add a third session monthly and encourage donations to help support comprehensive care.  WTVG

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Detroit Tigers fired Triple-A manager Gabe Alvarez + he sent an inappropriate text to a colleague, the team announced Tuesday. Interim manager Mike Hessman now leads the Toledo squad as the team moves forward.  WTVG
