COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials announced that repair work will begin this weekend, closing southbound I-475 south of U.S. 24 near Maumee and Perrysburg + drivers should plan for detours.  The Blade
  • Sunshine Communities (a longtime nonprofit helping northwest Ohio families) is featured in a national documentary series that honors its decades of life-changing work in the region. The series spotlights its ongoing impact in the community.  WTOL
  • Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. toured Clever Bee Academy on City Park Ave. yesterday and announced a $30,000 grant to support supplemental nutrition and create a community garden.  WTVG

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Swanton High School was evacuated Wednesday (May 6) after a mistaken chemical mixture disrupted a chemistry lab, Mayor Neil Toeppe said, and officials secured the area as they investigated the cause.  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Swanton High School was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after a chemical odor from a drain prompted an investigation following a mix-up in the chemistry lab — fire and hazmat officials responded and gave the all-clear around 3 p.m. with no injuries reported.  WTVG
  • RFK Jr. visited Clever Bee Academy (on City Park) on May 6 to announce $30,000 in Head Start funding for supplemental nutrition and a community garden.  WTVG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A UToledo study (from the Lake Erie Center) found that invasive goldfish affected local lakes yesterday; researchers said no freshwater ecosystem was immune to their spread.  The University of Toledo
  • Nature’s Nursery has treated over 930 animals already this year—a 25% increase from last year—and staff have adjusted schedules to cope with the growing number of wildlife needing care. The center urges residents to keep pets indoors during nesting season to help protect baby animals.  WTVG
  • Toledo will open the Clean Toledo Recycling Center on Tuesday, June 2 at 3900 Creekside Ave to offer year-round self-service recycling access for residents outside the curbside program. It will operate from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday with proof of residency required.  WTOL
  • Colorful warblers are moving through Metroparks Toledo and local natural areas as they head to northern breeding grounds this spring. Some will breed locally while others continue north - a seasonal sight that will delight local bird enthusiasts.  Toledo Free Press
