Good morning, Toledo. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 7th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Recent federal funding and staffing cuts have put Toledo nonprofits that support unhoused individuals under pressure as they struggle to meet new federal language rules. The Toledo Lucas County Homelessness Board and Leading Families Home are planning contingency measures—shelters may operate for only about 30 days without new funds if these cuts continue.  Toledo Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four seniors from Toledo Technology Academy of Engineering launched a high-altitude weather balloon Monday at Defiance Elementary to study urban heat island effects in partnership with UToledo, NASA and NearSpace—equipping it with infrared sensors and a GPS module to track heat data. Once the balloon returns, they will analyze the results to help build a space-ready payload for a ThinSat satellite launch.  WTOL
  • Toledo Public Schools accepted a $1 million gift from Dr. Tom and Betsy Brady last Tuesday to fund the new Brady Educator and Social Services Academy on the Scott Park campus. The academy (which will support facilities, curriculum, and scholarships via the TPS Foundation) will open for classes at the start of the 2026-27 academic year.  WTVG
  • Local mother Kimberly Crowley said her twin sons—Ashton and Austin Nichols—earned full college rides after working part-time in high school, with Ashton matching with Rice University and Austin applying to Ohio State. The twins said they will keep in touch with Facetiming once they start college.  WTVG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Emergency crews blocked off Lewis Avenue—between Laskey and Alexis Road—as heavy rain caused major flooding on a west Toledo street.  WTOL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Lucas County reported that about 2,200 voters cast ballots in the early morning of Tuesday’s primary—less than 1% of registered voters.  The Blade
  • Toledo adopted the Peace in Motion plan to lower gun violence over the next five years. The plan — approved by City Council Tuesday — will use data and work with schools, hospitals, and local groups to help affected youth, raise incomes, support home ownership, and offer $2,000 stipends to families impacted by gun violence.  WTOL
  • Toledo voters advanced Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz and Roberto Torres to the November general election—Kapszukiewicz earned about 53% of the vote while Torres received just over 24% during the May 6 primary with a 9.4% turnout.  WTVG
  • League of Women Voters of Toledo-Lucas County warned that proposed state and federal laws requiring extra documentation and ending ballot drop boxes—measures they call voter suppression—could make registering to vote more difficult. The group said these changes will force more voters to visit the board of elections.  Toledo City Paper
