  • Toledo schools are facing pressure on their budgets as diesel prices near $6, prompting officials to review spending plans to address rising fuel costs.  WTOL

  • Dr. David Kennedy (a University of Toledo professor) explained that while microplastics do not cause algal blooms, they give algae room to stick together; his comments suggest Lake Erie faces an added threat as phosphorus and nitrogen fuel the blooms.  The University of Toledo

  • Local leaders in Toledo are planning to expand emergency overnight shelters after two people died during extreme cold this winter. A panel discussion on Code Blue is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today at Glass City Enrichment Center to review shelter options.  WTVG
  • Voters in Lucas County approved a 0.9 mill levy on Tuesday for the Toledo Zoo — a measure replacing two expiring levies that will cost taxpayers less and is expected to generate $100 million over 10 years to fund capital upgrades including renovations and a new vet clinic.  WTVG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bay Park Hospital was placed on lockdown Tuesday after a security report about a bomb threat led authorities—along with local police and the fire department—to boost security; investigators later found nothing suspicious while patients continued receiving care.  WTVG

  • Toledo Mud Hens manager Gabe Alvarez was fired for an alleged violation of club policy — interim manager Mike Hessman takes charge as confirmed by the Detroit Tigers today.  WTOL
  • The Detroit Tigers fired Mud Hens manager Gabe Alvarez on Tuesday after alleging a club policy violation and named Mike Hessman as interim manager; Alvarez had managed since Opening Day 2025 and played for the team from 1998 to 2000.  WTOL
