CRIME NEWS

  • Toledo police shot a Cane Corso during a search warrant at a building on the 1200 block of Starr Avenue on April 9 when the dog ran out as officers announced their presence—an internal investigation later justified the shooting, and no arrests have been made.  WTVG

CULTURE NEWS

  • At Forest Cemetery, workers will soon finish the headstone for John Brown, a former enslaved man who fought for the Union and became a local barber and caretaker, as well as for his wife. Historians said the new marker will honor the couple’s role in Toledo history as Memorial Day nears—preserving a key part of our past.  WTVG
  • UToledo will host the Glass City Live concert at the Glass Bowl on May 24—Bryan Blair, vice president for intercollegiate athletics and director of athletics, said the event might make the campus a main spot for shows in northwest Ohio.  The University of Toledo

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy reported that Toledo gas prices increased on Monday and now average $3.14 per gallon from a survey of 315 stations—prices ranged from $2.77 to $3.335 while the national average remains slightly lower. Analysts said OPEC+ will raise oil production in June and improved gasoline supplies may help lower prices soon.  WTOL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Funding for Toledo high school exchange programs resumed after a federal freeze stopped payments for student stipends and program activities—giving students their back payments and keeping programs running for now. Organizers are worried about future support beyond 2026—federal budget cuts may threaten the long-term survival of these programs.  Toledo Free Press
  • An international team found a new salt (CPMAC) that makes perovskite solar cells three times stronger and more stable, which may help bring down costs and boost efficiency. UToledo’s Dr. Yanfa Yan and Dr. Xiaoming Wang helped test the salt and contributed to the study published in Science.  The University of Toledo
