ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews responded to an apartment fire on Alexis Rd. west of Jackman on Tuesday morning and extinguished the blaze by 6:50 a.m. without injuries while the Red Cross arranged temporary shelter for eight displaced individuals.  WTVG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Toledo Public Schools superintendent Romules Durant said the administrative union approved a pay freeze to address a projected $68 million deficit. The Board of Education will vote on the plan Tuesday night as part of efforts to stabilize district finances.  WTOL
  • Toledo invites youth aged 14–24 to join the Shoot This Not That – Tol: Youth Behind the Lens workshop, held June 8-12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Participants will get training, a stipend, and lunch as they use cameras & creativity to counter gun violence.  WTVG
  • Community members have voiced concerns over proposals to cut programs and consolidate schools ahead of a school district vote finalizing the changes. The vote is set to take place soon (exact schedule to be confirmed).  WTOL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers at UToledo and Missouri found invasive goldfish disrupt water quality and lower native species in lake experiments. The study warns pet owners to avoid releasing goldfish & calls on managers to treat them as a high-priority invasive species.  The University of Toledo

  • Residents are urged to build an emergency savings account if they cannot cover a sudden $1,000 bill without borrowing money. The report suggests starting with as little as ($10) at a time and was published Apr. 28.  WTVG

  • The city announced plans to rename Wilmot Street in honor of Kei’Mani Latigue—set to occur soon—to recognize her lasting contributions to Toledo.  WTVG

HEALTH NEWS

  • UToledo Health Division of Dermatology will offer a free skin cancer screening for veterans and active-duty military next week at their facility. Eligible individuals should contact the unit for scheduling details.  The University of Toledo
  • Mosquito larvae are developing one week faster than last year, the Toledo Area Sanitary District said, leading to early mosquito activity. Residents are advised to remove standing water from their yards & cover up with bug spray.  WTVG

  • The University of Toledo women’s tennis team will face Florida in the NCAA Tournament’s first round in Ann Arbor after the matchup was announced on Monday during the selection show.  The University of Toledo
  • Tom Moreland was introduced Tuesday as the new director of Rockets athletics at the University of Toledo. He said his appointment offers an opportunity of a lifetime as he prepares to build a robust athletics program in blue and gold.  WTOL
