- ➤ Marathon events this weekend will disrupt campus traffic and parking as more than 6,000 runners and walkers gather at the Glass Bowl finish line. Area 10 will close at 8 p.m. today—vehicles left will be towed—and several campus roads will face temporary closures on April 26 and April 27. The University of Toledo
- ➤ City leaders announced plans on Wednesday for downtown activation this summer that will include 75 Toledo Mud Hens games, the 20th anniversary celebrations of Lunch at Levis and Party in the Park, a free Friday night concert series in Promenade Park, Toledo’s first-ever drone show, and Garmin’s first-ever marathon — a strategy aimed at boosting local businesses. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Paul Hicks, 50, of Sandusky, was indicted Tuesday on three counts of murder and one count of kidnapping by Huron County officials after being taken into custody by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the U.S. Marshals Service—he is accused of being involved in the 2001 disappearance and death of his ex-wife, Regina Rowe Hicks, whose car was later found in a pond near Willard. - ➤ A Lucas County grand jury indicted 55-year-old Douglas Smith for an alleged armed robbery at Papa John’s where on March 18 he entered wearing a Burger King uniform and left with about $500 in cash—he faces two counts of Aggravated Robbery, four counts of Robbery and one count of Attempted Robbery after his arrest on April 9. - ➤ A Lucas County grand jury indicted Darnell Jones for abducting and killing his 13-year-old daughter Kei’Mani Latigue on or about March 17—March 18, charging him with aggravated murder, rape, kidnapping, aggravated burglary, endangering children, gross abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence. - ➤ Lucas County Sheriff’s Office warns Toledo residents that scammers are impersonating law enforcement by using fake names and titles such as 'Derrick Diggs' to claim a warrant is out for arrest and pressure victims to pay or share personal details—residents are advised to hang up and report these calls immediately. - ➤ The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy reported a 96.4% residency match rate—leading among Ohio's accredited schools and ranking sixth nationally—securing 54 placements in one-year residency programs. - ➤ Metroparks Toledo planted 50 new trees in Glass City Metropark using a grant from Fifth-Third; Chief Natural Resources Officer Zurijanne Carter said the trees help reduce the urban heat island effect and improve air and water quality. A native plant workshop will be held this Sunday, April 27 at the Glass City Enrichment Center from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. (residents from Vistula, Garfield and Starr neighborhoods are encouraged to attend). - ➤ The Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center said drug traffickers are mixing drugs like cocaine and heroin with fentanyl, which makes the supply unstable and puts users at risk of a deadly dose. The ONIC, which has a center in Toledo and works with law enforcement and health agencies, released its first strategic report and will use it to guide efforts against overdose deaths over the next five years.
